What you'll do

My adopted city Genoa: La Splendida is a poet and walker's dream, full of beauty & mystery waiting to be discovered. I'll introduce you to my own meditative form of urban exploration, using alternative self-created maps : we decide together on a certain theme, such as 'light' or 'green' or 'following the ugly to find beauty'.
You don't need googlemaps, an app or a guidebook to explore a city and get to know its people and spaces. 'Getting lost' helps you find interesting things. I'll guide you in the art of being a 'flaneur'. Walking dreamily in a non-utilitarian but curious way is a meditative wellness & artistic practice. As is engaging with your environment through an awareness of all your senses.
I'll take you to my favourite literary café, small independent bookshops, a famous library and inspiring, traditional cake and icecream shops for edible poetry!
Poetry is not boring stuff you study at school but a dynamic exciting ecstatic way of engaging with life and expressing your thoughts, feelings and observations. At various moments of our city walk we'll stop & I'll guide you in simple, practical & meditative exercises to help you write creatively about your experiences.
Other things to note
This experience is about being very prepared to be unprepared. It is about walking and writing, meditating on the poetics of the city. It is about expecting the unexpected. Getting lost to find ...

Passionate about walking, I began globetrotting at age 4. Taught poetry by my grandmother at age 7, I grew up to be an award-winning poet, featured in many international festivals and anthologies. I hold a Masters in Creative Writing and have taught a wide variety of students from refugees in Cape Town to high school students in Italy. I have been curated and commissioned by the Goethe Institute, Africa Centre, Sylt Foundation, Poesia Presente, Oprah magazine, Aune Head Arts, Chateau Lavigny, etc. I studied jazz with Joan Davies and have sung with a vast range of international musicians.

Where you'll be

We begin at Genoa's metaphorical door, the ancient port facing the world's oldest lighthouse, a symbol for embarking on our poetic adventure: a meditative walk through the tiny 'carrugi' of the medieval city, stopping at a literary café, independent bookstores, famous library & traditional cake shops, past grandiose streets and villas, climbing up hidden, ancient 'crêuza' paths to finish in a romantic garden high above the city sprawled before us
