What you'll do

We'll cycle beyond the city limits of George Town, enjoy a breakfast picnic with a view, chat over great coffee - or tea, if you prefer - and explore lesser known parts of the island.

Our unique route will first take you through a part of the heritage city and then along the island's eastern waterfront, southwards. We'll be cycling on a dedicated (Class 1) cycling lane for the most part - safe from the hustle and bustle of traffic but close enough to experience the sights and sounds of a charming island in the midst of rapid change. You'll pick up information that you otherwise won't get from the guidebooks and we're sure this will add a meaningful layer to your experience of the island!

We'll make two brief stops for refreshments and rest before the main stop: for our breakfast picnic! When we finally arrive at our end point, i'll hire a Grab (a reliable car-sharing service) to take us back to the starting point.

This leisurely 3-3.5 hour experience covers a distance of approximately 10 kilometres. It begins and ends at the heart of George Town. We can also start earlier - this way, you might be able to catch the sunrise and avoid the balmy heat!

***Note: If you prefer to start at a different time, kindly message me - i'll be happy to accommodate where possible.
Other things to note
This experience is well suited for both young and old. Bicycles (city bike) will be provided. The flat terrain makes for an easy ride and we'll follow your pace. We recommend wearing shoes. Do let us know if you have dietary restrictions.

Hey there! I'm Jon, an outdoor-loving photojournalist whose work revolves around documenting the essence of everyday living across the Southeast Asian region, mostly telling stories of people and places where nature, culture and travel intersect. I was born and raised on this beautiful island.

A few good friends and I founded Kayuh Penang in 2018 with a vision of reaching out, connecting and growing with the island's community of cyclists. Curating wholesome experiences filled with diverse perspectives, good food, coffee and conversations on two wheels is a big part of what we do and we are absolutely delighted to share the immense beauty of this tropical paradise with you.

ps: 'kayuh' means to pedal in Malay - so let's go!

Where you'll be

This cycling picnic shows you a very different side of an ever-growing Penang, through a local cyclist's perspective. As such, we'll be cycling beyond the old acclaimed streets of George Town towards a more suburban and industrial yet charming setting.

We'll make three stops, two of which overlooks the sea - for refreshments, breakfast and conversations. With the exception of Karpal Singh Drive, the other two stops are off the beaten path.

Jonathan is very familiar with local culture and the route to the destination. He is also good at taking photos, a great storyteller and really considerate during the whole process. You may find a experience specially for photo taking, but you would be hard to find a trip that bring you to ride a bike and prepare picnic food for you. Recommend you to book this experience!~~~

Highly recommended, especially for those who wants to see east Penang off a beaten path. Great family experience and the pace was just perfect for cycling. Jon was the perfect host, responsible, friendly and treated us like family. He prepared a picnic that suited to all our preferences and his mum’s butter cake and coffee was a magic touch. We’ll engage Jon again for our next visit to Penang.
