What you'll do

First we will get geared up! Bee suit, gloves, everything tight and snug for our bee hive exploration! Let me know if you have allergies to bees!! I am an EMT however, I would like to avoid allergic reactions!! Suited up, I have yet to be stung. Still, we all want to avoid an allergic reaction.
The experience will begin with a brief introduction of a bee colony. We will stroll the garden and view the plants the bees are fond of visiting. Then we will don our protective bee suits and gloves. I will fire up the bee smoker as smoke calms bees. My bees are very calm, however, smoke is always a good thing to have during observations.
Then we will approach the hive. I will direct you where to stand and when all is set, I will open the hive and explain how bees live. Several frames of bees will be examined to demonstrate brood patterns, workers working, and to look for the one and only Queen Bee.
Pollinators are endangered world-wide. I started raising bees to help the pollinators. Guests will leave with a new respect for the humble bee, a view of their home, a new appreciation for honey including a sample of comb honey, and potentially, the desire to get bees in their own back yards!
Other things to note
Pollinators are in danger world-wide. Seeing honey bees in their hive, watching them visit flowers, and tasting the "fruits of their labor" in the form of the purest of honey - comb honey - will reveal one of nature's most awesome wonders, the humble honey bee.

You will be awed when you see the many honey bees doing their industrious work inside the colony. You will see plants bees enjoy, examine the frames from the hive to see brood and the various stages of a bees life, identify the individuals of the hive, and search for Her Majesty, the Queen. You will have a new appreciation for honey, a new understanding of the role of pollinators, and you might just want to become a beekeeper yourself!

All hosts must follow guidelines created with World Animal Protection.

Caring expert hosts

Learn from biologists, conservationists, farmers, and more.

Diverse animals

Meet over 300 kinds of animals, from alpacas to zebras.

Where you'll be

Our ranch/farm offers wide open country space, the crops, and the climate for beekeeping. Mike leaves alfalfa blooming for the bees and I have planted bee plants around the property. A hive located close to the main house, offers a great opportunity to enjoy the bee plantings, watch the bee flight patterns, and open the hive for viewing all within close proximity.
