Born as Balinese makes me so familiar with the local art culture from stone, wood carving, jewelry, painting, to bead design. Since I was a kid, the one that always caught my attention is a mala, the special bead that usually uses for meditation or simple decorative fashion. Since I was a kid, I have trained and specialized in making this spiritual mala necklace. I live locally in Ubud and very happy to offer the Mala Making Workshop and demonstrate how to make mala for a spiritual necklace or bracelet like a local Balinese.

I didn’t get to meet Made, the women who helped us was very nice but didn’t seem to talk much and was even on her phone (using it and took a phone call) while we were making our pieces. I felt this was unprofessional. She explained the importance of Mala some but had us just read the paper. Note you are sitting on a blanket on hard tile, this may be uncomfortable for older guests. The location is set back behind the hustle and bustle of things which is nice. I am happy with my pieces I made but feel I could have done this experience anywhere.

The setting was nice and Made cute and helpful. I was expecting a more spiritual workshop as a mala is for meditation. We learned how to do it but Made didn’t have any knowledge about the stones and we didn’t practice with the mala. So it was really just the Workshop.

After a bit of miscommunication about meeting up, I finally found Made. Tip: go into Cafe and ask them to call Made and they will give you directions to the yoga shala, where the workshop was. The workshop itself was great. It was just Made and myself, so I ended up with a private lesson, so we got to share and communicate with each other, which was lovely. Made’s teaching was very informative and easy to understand. She is very patient and helped me when I got stuck. The Shala is on the edge of a rice paddy and is super beautiful. My end product was lovely and am very happy with how it turned out. Would highly recommend this workshop. Thank you Made xx

Such a lovely, calming way to spend an afternoon! I now really appreciate all the time and effort that goes into creating Malas, the knotting is tricky but very worth it in the end! The studio is in a very peaceful setting, over looking rice paddies and jungle. Highly recommend :)

Set in a calm, beautiful location, I made a personal Mala. The time passed quickly while we chatted and created our malas. This is a great activity to offer.
