What you'll do

We will go running around Manly’s iconic beaches and national park. We will jog at a casual, non-competitive pace along the coastal path to Shelley Beach then up onto North Head where you will get spectacular views over the Pacific Ocean and Sydney's iconic Headlands, where the British First Fleet sailed through 230 years ago, then twists and turns through the Australian bush before dropping down onto one of the area’s secret beaches, before heading back to central Manly. If you feel brave you can cool off in the ocean at Manly Beach. Or we can finish up with a proper coffee or some juice in Manly where the locals go (no not Starbucks!).

The run is about 8 km (5 miles), mostly offroad and on a mix of paths and tracks. This is a perfect experience for the traveller who wants to stick to a fitness routine but doesn't want to waste their limited time here working out in a gym!

I have spent much of my life running and exploring the outdoors, participating in endurance events, including marathons, triathlons, adventure races and ocean swims, and running expeditions overseas.

I am passionate about nature and community and have spent most of my life working for environmental and humanitarian organisations - including the World Wildlife Fund and MAG, a landmine clearance agency - and living overseas in the UK, Central America, SE Asia and East Africa, however I now call Australia home. I have lived in the Northern Beaches and North Shore of Sydney for the past 11 years.

Where you'll be

We start at South Steyne at the south end of Manly Beach, and run a loop past Shelley Beach, up across North Head to Collins Beach and then back to the starting spot. It's an easy 10 minute walk from the Manly Ferry terminal if you're coming from outside Manly (and I'd strongly recommend getting the Manly Ferry, it's one of Sydney's best attractions!).

What a wonderful way to start the day. Matthew met us at an easy to find start point and guided us on a well paced run. The run followed a very beautiful route with plenty of perfect photo opportunities and off the beaten track view points (we never would have found them ourselves!). The terrain was mixed road and foot path, this combined with our hosts knowledge of local history made it a fantastic way to get to know the area quickly. Thank you so much!
