What you'll do

Learn about the exotic fruits and vegetables that grow on the island, the traditional seasonings that are used by locals to give flavour to their dishes and about the raw tobacco that’s been cultivated here for centuries.
Admire the island’s handicraft credentials at a traditional gallery visited only by locals. Tastes the different sweets flavors at the traditional local store. We will then discover the religions of our country with a visit to a popular local botánica. We’ll discuss the continuing practice of the voodoo religion, as well as other religions that were imported from Europe centuries ago. We will visit the local Cemetery and learn about the history of the town through the local funeral customs a mix of spanish and other immigrants that shapes the actual identity of Puerto Plata. Next, we’ll get off the tourist trail and take a stroll to explore hidden alleys that hide the true spirit and lifestyle of Puerto Plata. Traditional barbershops, street food stalls that locals love and, in the old market neighbourhood. We’ll walk to the historical district, learning about the Victorian-style houses that dot the streets,enjoy a refreshing artisanal ice cream, visit the Gregorio Luperon Museum and end our tour on a tasty high, with a mouth-watering lunch of traditional local dishes at a local family restaurant that Dominicans love.

Where you'll be

We start at farmers market, then we visit the traditional botanica and local religion center. Stroll the neighborhood to colonial graveyard, "chulitos" bakery, old market, Victorian District, artisanal Ice Cream, Gregorio Luperon Museum, local family lunch.

Le guide était très gentil, s’exprime bien en anglais. Le tour s’est terminé à 12h15 au lieu de 13h00. La visite du marché a été très intéressante et nous avons eu l’occasion de discuter longuement avec les personnes fabriquant les bijoux, ce qui fût une très belle expérience, voir ces gens à l’œuvre était très intéressante. La visite du cimetière a été un peu longue et j’aurais pu y rester 5 minutes et cela m’aurait été suffisant. Le descriptif de l’activité devrait mentionner plus clairement ce qui est inclus dans le prix et spécifier ce que l’on doit payer ou non. Exemple : bouffe de rue Nous avons visité l’église catholique mais avons très brièvement parlé des autres religions. Le vaudou n’a pas fait partie de la discussion ce qui aurait été quelque chose d’intéressant pour nous. La visite du quartier fût assez rapide, nous avons passé en avant du barbier mais nous n’avons pas visité le commerce. La vue de l’architecture victorienne n’a fait l’objet que : voici la maison de mon grand-père et rien de plus ne fût mentionné. La visite du musée est intéressante mais sans plus. (Ceci est relatif à chaque visiteur bien entendu) Le descriptif de l’activité mentionnait un repas dans une famille, nous avons tout simplement arrêté dans une boutique de bouffe de rue pour manger un machila (???), je me pose encore la question à savoir si c’était à cela que je devais m’attendre. Nous avons payé le petit truc à manger, bien que cela ne coûtait pas cher (20 pesos pièce) cela n’était pas mentionné. Le guide nous a conduit à un restaurant dominicain et a terminé la visite sur ce point à 12h15

This is a really interesting tour much different to theta that are advertised. A great tour guide who is passionate about his city.
