Hidden hike of 88 temples in Kyoto

Kyōto-shi, Japan

Experience hosted by Naoko

3 hours
Includes equipment
Up to 4 people
Hosted in English

What you'll do

I’ll take you on a moderate level hike through a beautiful and quiet mountain not known by tourists. We will visit and pray at 88 little temples which are nestled in nature.

This type of experience is called 'O-henro'. The original 'O-Henro' is a famous pilgrimage in Shikoku where people visit 88 temples. The standard walking course is approximately 1,200km long and usually takes about 30-60 days to complete.

However, you can experience the miniature version 'O-Henro' in Kyoto in half a day!

We will start the tour in front of Ninnaji temple and briefly make our way through Ninnaji on the way to the 88 Temple hiking route. On our way to the start of the hike I will explain more about our route through the mountain.

We will finish our tour back at Ninnaji temple where we begin.

After visiting all 88 temples, I hope you will understand more about Buddhism, Japanese culture and the city where I live.
Other things to note
-Please take your physical condition into consideration before booking
-Reconstruction due to 2018 typhoons may reduce visitable temples by some
-Tour length may change based on the pace of the group

Thank you for visiting my page!
I was born and raised in Japan.
I have lived in Canada and Australia, visited many countries and love discovering new things.

I have been working at a hotel in Kyoto since 2016 and enjoy talking about and sharing the culture of Kyoto with the guests from all over the world!

I also enjoy hiking! I started hiking when I was 6 years old with my family.
One of the best things about living in Kyoto is that we are surrounded by beautiful mountains , so we can go hiking often!

This was a really great hike where you get to explore a deeper more local understanding of Japanese culture. Naoko was a wonderful person to talk to and she had prepared well in advance by asking locals about the area. I am very happy that I went on this hike!

I had so much fun with Naoko! I was so lucky to have been the only one to join in that day, having Naoko to myself and forming a new friendship. She helped me with a lot of useful Japanese phrases to use during the remaining of my trip. The hike was such a special experience by having a day immersed in nature and away from crowds of tourists. Definitely loved this experience and highly recommend Naoko!

Naoki was a wonderful personable guide to the 88 temple walk. It was a great experience to walk a mountain trail, stopping at each mini temple to pray and enjoy the views from the top of the mountain. It is something you could easily do by yourself but with her as a guide I learned a lot about Buddhist and Shinto religion and she was responsive to any questions I had about Japanese culture and way of life in Kyoto. She has excellent English and it was a great way to spend a morning in Kyoto.

I was fortunate enough to be the only person to show up on this tour with Naoko-san. She was very knowledgeable and explained all that I needed to know about the 88-temple circuit located in Kyoto, which I had not heard of before. Although not very popular with tourists here on a short schedule, this is a tour worth taking if you have the time and want to learn about how this circuit was established as a miniature replica of the much longer circuit in Shikoku. We had a wonderful conversation and Naoko-san patiently explained all that I needed to know and answered my questions. It is very pleasant to have such a guide and the three hours of hiking up and down the hills passed quickly. In addition, as I'm studying Japanese, it was a great opportunity to have an extended conversation about many other topics with her and practice my Nihongo. All in all, a wonderful tour that I heartily recommend for those that have the time and inclination to know about the ancient religious pilgrimages and practices, while working off all the great food of Kyoto on a nice, 3-hour long hike.
