What you'll do

During this hands on experience you'll be taking a peek behind the scenes of Abbey Gardens Pony Powered Learning Experience (APPLE). You'll have a chance to get up close and personal with the Abbey Gardens ponies during one of their twice weekly training sessions. You will work with me and two or three local volunteers to catch, groom and prepare the ponies for the session. Equine psychology and behaviour and it's relationship to human behaviour will be explored while you learn and practice some fundamentals of equine training. During the training session you will get to see Abbey Gardens in a way that regular visitors never do ... through the eyes of a pony! Make sure you wear sturdy closed-toe footwear and comfortable work clothes because this experience is all about active involvement.
Other things to note
No previous equine experience necessary. No riding is involved, all the training is done from the ground. Dress for the weather all the sessions are outdoors. All guests must sign a risk waiver

We were a group of three that was glamping in Huntsville and this was one of the few activities available nearby during the weekdays. The drive from Huntsville was outstanding with nice windy roads surrounded by autumn foliage. When we arrived, we met Lesley and her team, who were super friendly and safe (hand hygiene and social distancing; they didn’t wear masks because the ponies do not respond well to them wearing masks, but offered to wear them if it made us more comfortable). They introduced us to the ponies and taught us how to really get to know each pony. We were given instructions on how to help groom, handle, and walk them, but each one of us had a slightly different experience, based on the instructor (they either work there or they were knowledgeable volunteers). We went from grooming to walking to feeding... and although that sounds somewhat mundane, I felt that this experience allowed me to interact with the ponies more than I have from previous experiences riding horses/ponies (very rushed). Definitely dropping by if you’re someone that loves ponies!

Being around the horses, working with them and learning about them was a great experience. Not only do you learn about these lovely animals but they teach you about yourself. Lesley was a very sweet, gentle, patient host with so much understanding of the horses but also the guest that she was able to connect with you instantly and share a wealth of information and hands on training. It is definitely a worthwhile opportunity that I would encourage everyone to try at sometime. Also the whole Abbey Gardens project is a place to explore if you are in Haliburton...a most fascinating concept well worth looking into. I will be back many times and will be bring others too.
