Organic Garden and Night Tour Combo

Monteverde, Costa Rica

Experience hosted by Beth

4 hours
Includes equipment
Up to 6 people
Hosted in English

What you'll do

We will begin with Beth and Manolo and a tour of our organic veggie garden, fruit trees, and small sugar cane, banana, and coffee groves.

Depending on your individual interest, we can share our project with a focus on cultural and agricultural history, tropical ecology, health and wellness or just plain joy about the marvels of the seed to food plate process!

Participate in garden tasks, plant a tree in our reforestation area, or just choose which produce to harvest and take with you. Beth's teaching background will help make this experience a rich learning experience for guests of all ages.

After appreciating the sunset view together, you will enjoy the thrill of a night tour in our neighbouring Area de Conservacion Don Rodolfo with Manolo as your certified naturalist guide. As a night tour is a veritable creature hunt, you will hopefully see a wide array of our nocturnal neighbors and learn about them and our forest ecology from Manolo.
Other things to note
Monteverde is a place of dynamic weather patterns. We will make a plan together to adapt when the weather conditions inspire a change.

Entrance fee for trail system not included--$5 per adult extra.

We are a bicultural famiily with a deep connection to the local ecology.

Beth is a primary school teacher with over 20 years of experience who found her ¨heart home¨ here almost 25 years ago.

Manolo is a licensed naturalist guide with almost 10 years of experience who grew up in a farming family in the zone.

We have always had an organic garden alongside the forest, but are thrilled to now have space to do so on a scale to share with neighbours and our Airbnb cabin guests.

We are also Airbnb hosts! Check out the evaluations on our Monteverde Forest Hideaway page to get a sense of who we are! We also offer the cloud forest day tour combined with the garden tour and a family-friendly cloud forest tour on

Where you'll be

Our family ¨finquita¨or hobby farm in the Barrio Bajo Rodriguez neighbourhood in Los Llanos, at the edge of the Santa Elena-Monteverde zone. We are in a rural area but only 5 minutes by car from the commercial center.

The naturalist night tour will take place at our neighbours' trail system, called Area de Conservacion Don Rodolfo. This is a small, family-run operation with a beautiful forest.

Beth and Manolo were excellent hosts. Beth met us with open arms and loads of knowledge about Monte Verde and personal journey and her experiences with organic farming/gardening. We got to plant baby lettuce, harvest peanuts, and try a dish prepared from the garden. The night tour in Santa Maria was also a success. We saw many insects and spiders, a sloth, sleeping birds, and a snake.

This was such a great experience for all the family. We would definitely recommend this to anyone with young children. Beth is a school teacher so great with kid, her husband is a guide and grew up locally and both have a real passion for the area. They want you to have a taster of their monteverde life. We started by seeing their neighbours local sloth and armadillo (!) We then went to do planting - sweet potatoes, radishes, marigolds (to keep the bugs away), lettuces. We cut bananas and learned about the different varieties and pulled up sweet potatoes. The views were gorgeous from their garden. They have an Airbnb next door you can stay at and hey can help you with local trips. We then had a snack using some of the fruits and veggies we had picked. Our son tried lots of new foods as he had picked them himself! We then went on a night walk. We didn’t see many more large mammals that evening (not for lack of trying) but saw some cool spiders and then ate a local meal at their neighbours. This has been one of the highlights of our trips. Note this is in monteverde not la fortuna!

We really loved our experience with Beth. We are still traveling and don't have an opportunity to write a longer review but we are very happy to have had the experience of meeting Beth and Manolo. Manolo has a magic flashlight that can find even a stick insect in the dark. Beth called us the next day to invite us to come see a sloth in their tree. We consider them friends after our short meeting.

Beth went above and beyond in being incredibly helpful in organising our two experiences with her. My kids (twins aged 10) adored Beth from the word go. The loved pulling up and planting unusual things in the organic garden. We grown-ups really enjoyed it too. Manolo's style for the night tour provided a really good contrast, having grown up in the area he was very knowledgeable about the creatures and environment.

What a great experience! Beth and Manolo are very welcoming and made us feel immediately at home. Their love and respect for the land was evident, and they've got a fantastic garden that we spent some time exploring, planting and harvesting in while we watched the sun set. The snacks prepared from the garden were delicious. As a licensed guide, Manolo truly knows the forest and animals on the preserve surrounding their place, and we had a great time learning and spotting the animals that come out at night! It ended with a fantastic meal prepared on the preserve (an additional cost- but well worth it), and enjoyed spending time with them before taking off for the evening.

We absolutely loved our farm tour and night walk with Manolo and Beth! As soon as we got out of the car and began to walk the gardens it felt like we were old friends. Their home and gardens are located in a beautiful spot in Monteverde- we have a small garden at home and really enjoyed seeing the variety of plants and learning some of the different and similar plants that can be grown in Costa Rica vs Virginia where we are from. The night hike was lots of fun- we enjoyed a light snack and coffee before then and opted to have dinner after the hike for an extra fee. Beth made an incredible sweet potato dish from the garden to accompany dinner that we are still remembering. Excellent experience and we would certainly do it when we return to Costa Rica!! Thanks so much you two!
