What you'll do

Dirfi is a majestic mountain hosting rich biodiversity and mysterious fog clouds in the center of Evia island. Also this perios transforms into a paradise for mushroom hunting!

Our journey will start just outside the picturesque village of Steni through a dense forest(part of Natura) rich in chestnuts, firs, oaks, plane trees, ferns but also small mammals, various birds and amphibians.

The uphill trek starts next to an idyllic river, crosses the best part of the fir forest and ends at the local refuge. There you can breathe the fresh cool air from the Aegean sea and admire the cone of Dirfi and the surrounding peaks.

After a short rest we start our descent from a different terrain, traversing a rocky garden for a short while, overlooking the village and south towards other alpine peaks. Finally, we cross the pine forest with the smell of resin gushing around us!

During the trek, we make many breaks for refreshments and try to introduce you to local customs and culture.

In Steni we can enjoy a walk in the small alleyways & find hand-collected herbs!

The whole hiking route (~10km,+700m) has a moderate difficulty with small challenging but enjoyable parts.

On the way back we can stop at a mushroom station and learn more about the fungi kingdom!

*See tips for transport
**Evia is in the yellow (low risk) zone for covid, shops & restaurants are still open!
Other things to note
*The transport from Athens to Chalkida should be covered by yourself. Train & buses (accessible by metro) run from Athens almost every hour to Chalkida ~1.15h ~7€ ticket price
**After booking I send specific directions to individuals to meet together in Athens and arrive as a whole team

Where you'll be

Mount Dirfi is situated in the middle of Evia and with a height of 1743 m. is the island’s highest peak.

The proximity to Athens and the unrivaled beauty of the aesthetic forest making the mountain a favorite destination for hikers.Being between Aegean Sea & Evia's gulf offers great 360o views with weather conditions normally found on much higher mountains.

Seen from afar it resembles a volcano which is why many people call it "Greek Fuji"

An amazing experience during quarantine for natives and new comers alike. The storytelling began literally as soon as we met up and didn’t end until the drop-off! I learned so much and took a lot of great photos of the mushrooms! The hike is skillfully designed to ensure less rigor on the tail end (which I very much appreciated). Fotis was a delight to say the least; it felt like a friend showing me around versus a distant tour guide. Definitely an experience I will remember for a long time! I would highly recommend to anyone looking to change up their routine and remember the wonders of Evia island . Safety was prioritized with masks, hand sanitizer, and distancing.

We so enjoyed our hike! Fotis has a passion for and knowledge of the outdoors that is unparalleled, and his enthusiasm is infectious. He was also knowledgable about mushrooms and where to find them, sharing the varieties and how to identify them.He answered all our questions and helped us enter the world we didn't know was all around us. The more we learned, the more mushrooms we saw! I highly recommend this experience. Fotis offers a number of experiences, and we will definitely be booking with him again!
