Afro Cuban Visual Arts at a glance

La Habana, Cuba

Experience hosted by Adriana & Jose

3 hours
Includes drinks, tickets, transportation
Up to 8 people
Hosted in English, Spanish

What you'll do

We will meet at the National Museum of Fine Arts (Cuban Collection Building). To start our experience, we will do it in the Cuban way: sharing a cup of coffee while we get the opportunity to know each other and talk about the dynamic of the day. We will navigate through the Cuban visual arts development, focusing on specific pieces to understand the presence of the African diaspora in the national creation. Then, we will ride together to Hamel Alley, the oldest community project in the country dedicated to promote AfroCuban culture. Once there, we will invite you to share the traditional cocktail of the place to start getting ready to explore the Alley, discovering in its walls and galleries the magic of the people´s art. At the end of the day you will have understood the synergy between the academic and the popular creation. And if you are lucky enough you could even meet Salvador, the main artist of the project
Other things to note
1-If you come on Sunday you can also enjoy an Afro Cuban Performance at Hamel Halley.
2- We do not include transportation back to your airbnb housing or back to the Museum

I’ve had the pleasure to participate in other Beyond Roots experiences and each has been unique and expertly delivered. The museum experience with Francys was exceptional! She is well-versed in the topic and her enthusiasm is contagious. learned a lot about Afro Cuban artists—their works, influences— and look forward to studying more. The visit to Callejon de Hamel was unique and a nice compliment to the experience. Please don’t hesitate to book this tour.

What an incredible tour!!! Francys is highly spirited, competent and friendly. We learned so much from her art walk that we want to take more of her experiences and learn more about her organization. We especially love how she tied the history, politics and spiritual aspects of Cuba in to helping us have a deeper understanding of the art. We are super impressed.

The Afro-Cuban tour was phenomenal! Our guide Francys' depth of knowledge, passion and perspective of the infusion of arts and culture across the Cuban community was fantastic. Not only did she cover the works of many artists at the International Museum but also had the pleasure of an introduction to Beyond the Roots, a phenomenal project highlighting the social impact of the African diaspora and meaningful ways to further understand Afro-Cuban history and its influence beyond Cuba. I highly recommend this tour and support of their project, connecting Cuba to global communities.

Francys is the brightest light you will find in Havana! She is kind, knowledgable, and really curious about your life as well. The tour starts in the museum, where she takes you through the AfroCuban art, and then heads over to Hamel Alley. The whole time, you can see the passion exploding in Francys as she shows you her favorite pieces and tells the artists' stories. Her knowledge of the history and culture is also impressive and shines through the experience. Highly recommend!

We were treated with the opportunity to see, listen, hear and taste the unique culture and art of African Cuban religions. This experience was an immersion into Cuba’s Afro Cuban communities. Entertaining, fun and educational. The scholarship that went into Francis’ presentations was doctorate level knowledge. Woven through the facts and figures was dance, drumming, singing, eating, and drinking. A live visual art show. I highly recommend all of Beyond Roots experiences to guests from all backgrounds.
