TOUR DESCRIPTION

After 50-minute drive from Barcelona we first visit the Benedictine Abbey, first built on the 11th century and home to Catalonia’s Patroness Saint, The Black Madonna, a strong symbol of spirituality and unity for the local people.

After, we hike up to the top, from where we enjoy the stunning views from the Natural Park of Montserrat and the rest of Catalonia from a bird´s eye view. Mediterranean Sea, main valley of the country and the Pyrenees further away, drawing the border with France.

During the hike we will walk on the same paths used by pilgrims hundreds of years ago, we will get inspired by Montserrat’s fascinating flora and fauna and we will experience unique ways where rocky pillars and ravines show us how inner mysterious water emerge from the hidden and undiscovered very center of the massif.

Back down in the Monastery area, we have some free time where you can browse amongst regional products in the local farmer’s market before we head back to Barcelona.

Where you'll be

We visit Montserrat’s Natural Park and its Abbey which is the heart of Catalan identity. Its combination of history, spirituality, nature and culture make Montserrat such a unique place to visit.

At the Abbey we see the Atrium, Basilica and Black Madonna. After, we hike through some of the most impressive viewpoints of the Natural Park. We enjoy breathtaking parts of this rock formation, while we share the legends hidden in the mountain.

It was an excellent tour and an enjoyable hike. Montserrat itself is beautiful but it definitely feels good to be shown around by someone who knows the area well and can take you off the beaten track a little. I would definitely come back and do it again.

Uni really made this tour/hike a memorable experience for me and my family. He is very friendly and we felt welcome in his presence. He thoughtfully answered all of our questions and engaged in friendly conversation. Being from Barcelona, he brought his passion for his city to the tour and was very knowledgeable of the monastery, religion, history and the mountain itself. We still can't believe how much we were able to hike. The monastery and the hike are both incredibly beautiful. You will not be disappointed by this tour!

This trip to Montserrat has been the highlight of my stay here in Barcelona. I will definitely join Uni during my next visit here. Hopefully, he will make a special tour to the mountain to see the sunrise. Although I’m not really into history, Uni managed to make it really interesting to hear. Besides Montserrat, Uni told us a lot about the culture of present day Spain, Catalonia and the Basque Country. My friend didn’t have any warm clothes but that wasn’t an issue at all as Uni brought along a warm jacket specifically for her. We came to the meeting point 10 minutes earlier and he was already there waiting for us. Also, my friend spoke zero English and Spanish but wonderfully sometimes she understood what he said without any translation. Tip: make sure to wear comfortable shoes like trainers or boots. Flip flops would be flat out dangerous.
