Amazing experience! I actually booked this as a Christmas gift for my parents which were spending a month in the area. They spent a memorable day and were very grateful of the originality and smooth unfolding of this experience! We highly recommend.

It seems everyone in the DR is a tour guide who will sell you whatever you dream, including whale watching trips out of season. But Julie is the real thing. Her tour begins in an agricultural community of El Rancho Espanol in the heartland of Samana, where Dominican women run a fledgling cooperative producing coconut oil. The half day begins with Dominican coffee on an outdoor table laid with their best cups, and proceeds to the factory where the women demonstrate and explain every step of the process, and invite you to work alongside. Julie's bond with the woman, her command of the subject and translation skills give you a window into Dominican life you will not otherwise have unless you're a Spanish speaker, and it's heartening to see the difference that earning their own money makes to women who before this haven't been so empowered. Their lead organizer Ana prepares a really splendid lunch of a kind you won't get anywhere else, including an amazing, thick pigeon pea soup over rice; and sits with you through the meal fielding every last question. It's a beautiful countryside and they're beautiful people. Meeting them was one of the highlights of our DR stay.

It was a great experience and we really enjoyed it! If you are looking for something different of the usual “tourist tours”, this is definitely the right choice for getting in touch with the local people and their simple way of living. Julia will give you many useful information and is really a great guide and of good company. Thank you once again and all the best!
