What you'll do

I meet you at Kursky Railway Station, hand you the tickets and make sure you get on the right train.

Enjoy the scenery on your way to Tula (2 hours), and meet your local Tula guide at the station. You will go by taxi to Yasnaya Polyana, family estate of Tolstoy family, where Leo Tolstoy was born and spent most of his life. Explore the estate and the house, visit the writer’s grave, enjoy a picnic made up of local products in picturesque meadows on the estate, and take a stroll through the beautiful English park.

On our way back to the city, we make a stop to sample delicious local honey blended with different berries and nuts.
When back in Tula, we head to our favourite cafeteria for a taste of some authentic Russian food. Together we try traditional pelmeni or vareniki (Russian dumplings with meat or potato) and mors (a traditional berry drink).

After the meal you will walk through the city centre towards the Kremlin and hear about its amazing history. Take some postcard-perfect pictures admire the shiny golden domes above you, hear about the dramatic events that took place here.

Before you jump on your train back, make sure you have all the souvenirs!

I had the idea of this tour as a literary pilgrimage to the birthplace of Russia's best known writer Leo Tolstoy, as well as a great way to show you Russian life outside of big and busy cities. And my friend Katya was just a right person for this tour! Katya has moved to Tula four years ago, and she admires its history and modern life. Her absolute favorite is Leo Tolstoy's estate Yasnaya Polyana: Katya is in love with the serenity of its parks, the smell of apples in autumn and the frozen-in-time feel.

We enjoyed the tour so much! Tolstoy’s estate is a magic place. It grabs you and you feel like you can spend the whole day there. Tula was also quite beautiful and interesting. The old Kremlin and the new waterfront make a great combination. Thanks to our guide Katya for making this day so special!

Wow!! That was something outstanding. Peaceful place full of history. No matter if you read War and Peace by Tolstoy, go for it. Katy’s was our guide, she is local and knows her way around Leo Tolstoy estate. It wasn’t my first time there, but definitely being with Katya added super value to our visit. Thank you!

I visited Yasnaya Polyana in winter time, my guide Katya was very profesional and kind, I had a chance to visit Leo Tolstoy estate and it was one of the highlights of this tour! After Yasnaya polyana we went to Tula and honestly, I did not expect anything from this city, but it turblned out to be very beautiful, with its own Kremlin! I definitely recommend this tour, especialy if you want to see something outside Moscow.

If you are looking for the profound tour outside of Moscow it is definitely the one you will like. Especially if you know who is Leo Tolstoy :) Because the greater part of the tour is spent in Yasnaya Polyana and this is a very beautiful place by the way. I learned so much new info about his life and all in all about Russia. The guide was very attentive and we felt as if we travel with a friend. Do not forget to buy the local gingerbread, I liked them so much.

Our trip to Tula was an amazing adventure, first we jumped on the train and spent couple hours to get to Yasnaja Poljana. However train was comfortable and the view was changing from urban to rural and more enjoyable. The highlight of the trip was Tolstoy house that is kept right the same as during his life and lots of breathtaking stories around his life and works. We had lots of meaningful conversations with Katya based on Tolstoy philosophy and his outstanding personality. The place itself is amazing and has a special calm and peaceful atmosphere that I felt relaxed and balanced. We also had tasty dumplings and short walk around Kremlin in Tula before we head back to Moscow. Thank you for such a memorable day!
