What you'll do

Join an insider's hike in the Lake District that will be safely tuned to conditions on the day and the abilities of the group. This trek, in reasonable weather a classic ridge walk, will reward you with a sense of achievement & world-beating views over lakes & mountains: the inspiration for poets like William Wordsworth. It's a special place & the distance between you & heaven here is a lot less! We will go through route planning, map reading, gear & basic mountain safety. You do need to be fit enough to walk in hilly terrain, have a head for heights & curiosity about your natural landscape. This was once a land of ancient volcanoes and deep glaciers and we'll discover how they have left their mark. Today it’s a place of rocky crags, deep lakes & green valleys. I want to give small groups of people the opportunity to see the terrain through the eyes of someone who is a local but also a professional geologist. You’ll acquire basic skills that will help you begin to satisfy your curiosity about landscapes all around us. We will walk and talk with a purpose! Pick ups from Carlisle, Penrith & Keswick possible. Try another northern England classic hike: Explore Hadrian's landscape
Other things to note
You need to be fit enough to hike in hilly terrain and be comfortable with heights. Weather in England is notoriously changeable, so hiking gear is essential. Your safety is the bottom line

I’m a local, raised in Cumbria, did my degree in Newcastle. I’ve been hiking, running & biking across the north of England for more than 50 years. So I know the hills & valleys of the Lakeland fells intimately but I also understand why they are as they are - their geology. I worked for the British Geological Survey for 38 years, including Cumbria; I retired as a director. I was a science consultant to the BBC for 6 landscape documentaries. I'm a National Trust guide & first aid trained. I am a trustee of 3 northern environmental charities & guide hikes in Northumbrerland & the Lake District

Where you'll be

This trek is in the Lake District, a National Park & World Heritage Site. Our goal will be a ridge walk linking the high fells in the north & centre of the Park. It's a landscape that attracts people of all backgrounds, whether for physical or spiritual motives. We will explore its geological & historical evolution thru sights which most people fail to appreciate but I suspect the emotion you will retain long after is its power to inspire you

My husband and I can't over-emphasize how much we enjoyed our day hike with Ian. If you're considering this experience, you probably know that the Lake District is beautiful, lush, and idyllic - and it is. We were deeply impressed with the scenery. From the outset, Ian was prompt and communicative about preparation - timing, what to bring, what he'd provide, etc. He laid out options for the day depending on what we felt up to and throughout the hike was very encouraging and flexible. His passion for and knowledge of the area was hugely additive to the experience. On top of everything, he's an interesting and friendly person who's fun to spend time with. If you're considering this hike or an experience with Ian, do yourself a favor and book it.

The whole day was amazing. Ian was a great guide and I feel lucky to have had him escort me and my teenagers on our first walk in The Lakes. He tailored the walk to make sure that we could achieve more than any of us thought possible. The route was challenging- I am proud of myself and the kids for completing it. Ian took us off the tourist routes and we were treated to epic views and trails with only the occasional other hiker. Ian kept us safe and was a wealth of knowledge.

The Lakeland fells hike was an amazing experience. We covered 4 of the peaks(Wainwright’s). Only another 210 to do😄. Ian was a fantastic guide. His knowledge of the area was amazing and very reassuring. We are not experienced hikers, but with Ian’s experience and guidance we felt very safe in his hands. To top it all he is such a nice guy and so easy to get along with. It really was an enjoyable day. His wife makes a delicious ginger cake made all the more enjoyable eating when surrounded by stunning views. Would highly recommend you try this experience, you will not be disappointed. Will definitely do this experience again if we are back in area. Thanks Ian, Liz and Eamonn

We had a fab day out with Ian. He has amazingly detailed knowledge of the area, including from a geological perspective. He was meticulous about our safety and well-being. He prepared a great route for us with plenty of scope for lengthening/shortening/adapting if necessary...... and we felt comfortable and relaxed in his company. We had a great sense of achievement at the end of our lake’s hike and can’t recommend this experience with Ian highly enough.

Fabulous experience!!  Great communication before the trip - weather forecast, gear, previous walking experience and what I wanted to accomplish. We reviewed basic map reading and navigation before heading out. Ian’s knowledge of our route and the terrain was expert and I felt very safe safe throughout the day. We did some stunning peaks and ridges, and all I had to do was enjoy the majestic beauty of our surroundings. Ian explained what I was seeing, and the connections between geology and other facets of natural history. Pictures taken throughout the day were used to create a personalized movie of our route. Highly recommend this experience.
