What you'll do

The aim of the experience will be to share and play songs from southern Africa together on the marimba with a local London musician. Over 60 minutes, participants will learn these songs using a set of Zimbabwean marimbas. I'll share the history behind the songs and give a vivid image of southern African culture, with a particular focus on southern African musicians who have a connection to London. Participants will get the chance to try out soprano, tenor and baritone parts on the marimba. The experience will be delivered in the typical, traditional, southern African way - by ear, enabling participants to more freely engage their senses and be present in the experience! All ages and musical abilities are welcome!

Meet your host, Otto

Host on Airbnb since 2015

I am a London based percussionist specialising in southern African folk music. I write and perform, and I teach a mix of traditional music, original music and covers from Zimbabwe, South Africa and Botswana - including songs that were written by exiled southern African musicians who lived here in London during the mid to late 20th century. Having been an active player, performer and teacher of African music since 1998, I am very passionate about sharing the joy that my instruments and music have brought to my life.
