What you'll do

We'll kick it off at the hub of Lancaster, our colonial square, and begin to explore the concentration of historical sites spanning three centuries - all within just a couple of blocks! The nation's oldest continuously operating farmers market and theater, the birthplace of the Conestoga Wagon, homes of some of Lancaster's most famous citizens, colonial churches, and much more will be brought to life through stories, characters, arts and architecture. You will learn the out-sized roll our small city played in the birth and growth of America as you stroll through charming streets and alleys and begin to understand the building blocks that take us to the present day.
Sound great? Well there is still much more. After our old city history walk, we will whet our whistle at some of Lancaster's finest craft beer establishments - and the history isn't over. You will learn how much of our colorful past is tied to beer. From 19th century German influence to amazing tales of prohibition ingenuity, the beer flowing through the taps comes from the present day but reaches back across the last two centuries - and it's delicious!
Other things to note
This is a couple friendly, year-round experience. We can comfortably adapt to any weather conditions or personal preferences. If you don't see a time that works for you, please contact me directly.

Hi, I'm Mike, a life-long Lancaster history enthusiast and craft beer lover. I take our fascinating history seriously, not just appreciating the many sites, but looking behind the curtain for the threads that knit together past and present - exploring stories that bring characters to life and give texture to the experience. Oh, did I mention I love craft beer? Well, I do, and we have plenty to enjoy. I'll give you an insider's pass to some of the best craft brew taprooms around.

Where you'll be

In addition to walking the oldest part of downtown Lancaster, we will be ducking into some of my favorite back alley brew pubs. These are off the beaten path, but definitely on the right side of brewing history. Springhouse Brewing Company, 2nd Gear Taproom, and Wacker Brewery are on the agenda and you will love the beer as well as the incredible stories.

We had an awesome time on the Lancaster history and craft beer tour. Our guide was knowledgeable and had a lot of quirky anecdotes to share about the town. It was just my husband and I on the tour and Mike was able to share information he thought we would be interested in and answer our questions. We had no idea there was so much to learn about and do in Lancaster. Plus the beer was great. Looking forward to coming back and experiencing more!

I travel a lot and have done many of these experiences around the world. My 24-year-old daughter was with me and 2 of my adult friends. My daughter does not love the history part but I lured her with the promise of beer. Also, our group had gone to Lancaster to look around a couple days before and were not impressed. And it was a rainy day. So that is how it started. So we get there and Mike hands out these Bluetooth speakers to put in our ears. This was genius - why does every tour not use this. It was so much easier to hear and gave you a little freedom to look at the direction most interesting. The main reason why this tour was amazing though was Mike's obvious love for the city and his passion in its history fighting for equal rights for marginalized people. My daughter kept saying why have I not heard about this person or this story - history in high school would have been so much more interesting. Also, he was great at pointing out architectural elements that we clearly missed in our other trip to Lancaster. Really was a great experience - that got topped off with some beer at the end - but that was almost an afterthought by then. Certainly encourage others to do this great experience with Mike.

Michael's tour of Lancaster City far exceeded all of my expectations! Michael truly knows the city's history inside and out. I am a Lancaster native (born and raised) and felt like Michael's stories and oral history enabled me to travel to a "new place." I highly recommend Michael's tour to anyone coming through Lancaster or even for those who have lived here their whole lives and are searching for a new experience. The beer history and tour was an added bonus! Thank you Michael, I will be booking your tour again with family and friends who come through our city!

I planned this family get together for my son’s 22nd birthday. We had a range of people in our group of 10 ranging in age from 18-84. We all enjoyed the time spent with Michael. My husband is quite the historian, he really enjoyed learning about Lancaster. There was a lot of walking and if it hadn’t been so darn 🥶 cold it would have been really nice to look at the buildings and shops along our walk. The pubs(2) we stopped at were very accommodating and had great selections of beer that my son and the beer drinkers really enjoyed. We even stopped at a place for dinner after our tour that Michael recommended. Absolutely A+

Decided to take this tour with my girlfriend for Valentine's day. Michael was a talented and knowledgeable tour guide. My girlfriend and I had little knowledge of Lancaster, PA but Michael gave us a great understanding of the town's history and its atmosphere today. Michael had bluetooth earpiece to help us listen along. These were super helpful because it allowed us to social distance from the other members of the tour. The tour was the perfect length and showed us some really charming parts of Lancaster. Great drinks and even better company; what more could you ask for!
