What you'll do

We will meet at the Hout Bay Harbour (Fish on the Rocks) , from there we will start the visit of the community.

We will take a long walk around the community; meeting interesting local people as the Khoi or Rastas (knowing the herbs they used for ancient generations) , by there I will explain you the situation of our community; where seafood is flooded and poverty and unemployment is the biggest obstacle to overcome.

Then we I will explain you some of the projects that Meraki Bay is developing around Hangberg.

After knowing the community we will make a little hike up to the mountain looking for the amazing views that the Sentinel Mountain can offer us.

Before finish we can try some local food in the community if the visitors want it.

We can make this plan, but as this is a unique experience, if you want to stay more time meeting people from the community, chatting with them or enjoying the environment we can work it out!
Other things to note
Meeting point (fish on the rocks) At the final of Hout Bay Harbour!

Hi I am Niklaas Jansen,
Born and raised in Hout Bay. I am a rastafarian.
I used to work as a tour guide, I also do music and I studied higher education in adult learning at University of Cape Town.
Social injustice is my core topic especially in a South African context. I also work as a volunteer with Meraki Bay helping under privileged kids and tutoring classes in my own.
Passionate about my community and it's history. I like telling the world about our social context and our history.

Such a unique opportunity to learn about the community from Niklaas and his friends around town. We felt 100% safe and comfortable the entire time, and he did a great job of allowing us opportunities to meet and talk to others, without forcing you into a situation that might have been outside of your comfort zone. Niklaas was so easy to talk to and there was never an awkward silence. A few highlights: his students seeing him in the street and saying hi to “coach”, stopping in the pool hall where his friends were watching football and enjoying the holiday weekend, and learning his strategies to motivate his students to achieve outside of what their current environment shows them. Niklaas’s attitude on life and philosophies he tonight us about the Rasta lifestyle will stay with us for years to come!

Niklaas is an amazing human being, devoted to the community and its development. Not only did he share with us their gorgeous location, but we could also interact with the locals, really feel their struggles and become aware of their needs as well as experience a glimpse of their lives. His passion for what he does is truly inspiring, wanting to be a tangible hope for younger generations in the community; huge heart, always wanting to give back. People like him will change the world! Totally worth it if you want to experience a different side of Cape Town, not a touristy area. Grateful for this experience.

We had a wonderful experience and learned a lot about the community. We were only two girls and felt very safe with Niklaas. He is a great guide. The people welcomed us and we went up to the mountain where you can see the Seal Island.

Book this tour with, Niklaas! This is such a unique and wonderful experience with such a humble and kind man. I connected with him the moment I started communicating with him and he was so helpful. He is so knowledgable about Cape Town, South Africa, different cultures and people in general. I had such a great time with him and the people he introduced me to that I ended up going back to meet him. He and the people he introduced me to are some of the kindest people I have ever met in my life. The places he showed me were breathtakingly beautiful and it helps you to get a different perspective about Cape Town. Which I believe everyone should know and learn. I am so happy with this experience and even more happy that I had the opportunity to meet Niklaas. I not only received a great tour, I have a new and great friend. I definitely recommend booking a tour with Niklaas.
