Shibori and Indigo Dyeing

Bideford, United Kingdom

Experience hosted by Bridget

2.5 hours
Includes food, equipment
Up to 5 people
Hosted in English

What you'll do

Shibori is the ancient Japanese art of folding cloth to form a resist. In this shibori workshop you will learn how to fold, clamp, tie or sew material to form a pattern before dyeing in indigo. You will learn how to create an indigo vat and watch the magic of the dye turning from green to blue. There will be plenty of time to explore different techniques before designing your own silk or cotton scarf to take home.
Other things to note
Aprons and gloves are provided but I suggest wearing old clothes in case of splashes from the dye bath.

I learnt the art of Shibori (Tie-Dyeing) from a Japanese master during a visit to Kuala Lumpur while I was living in Cambodia. My skill has been perfected it over the past 5 years and I continue to learn. I love using indigo and the magic of the changing colours and patterns on the cloth. When the material leaves the dye vat it is green but when exposed to air it turns a vibrant blue. The material is left folded for awhile before I open it up, it is only then I see the finished item.
I sell my scarves and household linen at craft fairs such as RHS Rosemoor and online.

We had lovely afternoon with Bridget, a wonderfully friendly lady with lots of knowledge and enthusiasm. We would highly recommend her class as a great experience, with a lovely unique scarf to take home with us. 5*
