What you'll do
In this experience, we'll spend our time photographing local and migratory birds in the best place for bird-watching in Toronto. We'll meet at the entrance to the park, an urban wilderness with over 10km of paved trails, and diverse biological communities, just east of the downtown core. We'll stroll at a leisurely pace as we meander the tree-lined trails on the edge of Lake Ontario. We'll keep a lookout for barn swallows, warblers, flycatchers, hummingbirds, swans, terns, herons, cormorants and more, and we'll record our sightings through an app to help with science and conservation. Whether you are a birder or not, you'll enjoy the incredible nature park that is on the bird and monarch butterfly migration route. It is a prime bird-watching area in May, early June, late September and early October, but birds can be observed throughout the year. Most locals don't know about this place. Bring your camera with a lens that provides a range from wide-angle to telephoto so we can photograph insects, birds, flowers, mammals and anything in between. While our main focus is birds, we might come across beavers, and muskrats too. I'll share photography tips along the way.

Where you'll be
We'll visit Tommy Thompson Park, an urban wilderness on the edge of Lake Ontario, but depending on interests, weather, abilities and preferred time, there are two other nature parks in Toronto that are good for bird-watching too. We'll spend about 1.5 hours enjoying a nature walk, listening and observing as we look for songbirds, waterbirds, animals and even insects. Some of the parks have a great view of the Toronto skyline.
