What you'll do

After a brief tour and meeting family members and the miniature horse and the dogs, we'll head to the orchard about a mile up the road. I'll outfit you with pruners, then give you a quick tutorial on pruning an apple or peach tree. I'll continue to give you pointers as we prune together. If there is interest, grape vines or blueberries could be a focal point. At the end of our day, we will gather back at the house for a meal together with the family.

We are a Mennonite family who own and operate Olde Lane Orchard, currently about 23 acres of apple, peach, pear, and plum trees. I have spent January through March of the past 17 years with one or more of my 5 sons crawling through trees, pruning out dead, diseased, and unnecessary wood. The previous owner of the original plot taught me much of what I know about pruning, enhanced by Purdue extension horticultural congresses. Not many people are learning these skills anymore or experiencing the joy of buds about to burst under clear skies and occasional chortles of sandhill cranes.
