The Secrets of La Boca Social History

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Experience hosted by Paola

2.5 hours
Includes food, tickets
Up to 10 people
Hosted in Spanish, English

What you'll do

We will visit the non-tourist sector of the most colorful neighborhood of Buenos Aires: La Boca. We will talk about its people, art, Immigration, anarchism, tango, football, community life, history and customs.
We’ll visit the harbour, warehouses and its picturesque train station where large numbers of immigrants arrive. We’ll get inside a corrugated metal clad “conventillo” (tenement houses) that used to provide shelter to immigrants and today hosts a Cultural Centre. We’ll visit one of the many Mutual Assistance Associations: the Volunteer Fire Department. We’ll also get a grasp of the art of Boca through its large murals reflecting different social issues. We’ll observe some old buildings that hosted anarchist newspapers and bordellos in the early 20th century and two local icons of football and Christianity, which worked as refuges for these rootless communities, Boca Juniors Stadium and The Salesian Church. We’ll visit Caminito to find Tango and Fileteado in every corner.
Other things to note
Please arrange your own transport to La Boca. At the end of the tour you may choose to stay in La Boca or return with me to May Square. We don’t recommend carrying anything valuable, however, having some cash at hand might be a good idea.

I love Buenos Aires, I am a tour guide, I was professor of Guided Practices at the National University of San Martin for some years. At this moment I am taking a master's degree in Argentine Culture and Diploma in Social History of Tango. I am passionate about showing my city, with a non-tourist approach and transmitting everything I know about it.
I founded PerfectArgentina with a friend in 2011, and @TuguiaenBa. I also organize out off the beaten track tours for local people.

Where you'll be

We’ll visit the Volunteer Fire Department, whose creation emerged as a consequence of the many fires that repeatedly affected the conventillos. We’ll get inside one of these tenements, which today hosts a Cultural Centre. We’ll have a coffee at Notable Bar La Perla, a former brothel and then head for Caminito. And of course we will see a lot of Murals and graffitis

This experience should be called "Magical Ride in La Boca," for that is what it is. A mixture of art, along with history and emotional components, all the while Paola is describing the very soul of La Boca’s charming corners. The tour of its internal streets, the picturesque "conventillos", the murals and the visit to the home and workshop of a true artist, added to the anecdotes and historical events of this unique neighborhood, transformed this walking tour, rather than just a guided tour, a visit to another time... This is an experience for all tourists and even Argentines: AN UNBELIEVABLE ONE ! Thanks Paola for sharing your knowledge of La Boca.

Paola is a fantastic tour guide! The tour felt much more intimate and intellectual than some of the other tours you see in La Boca. Would definitely recommend!

Paola was a wonderful host. We learned so much about La Boca from her and she showed us places that we couldn't have visit on our own. She is so knowledgable about Argentina and this neighborhood history and that was super helpful for us to understand why things are the way they are. She was able to answer all of questions and she had some very interesting POVs to share. She's also very friendly and was able to manage/tailor the tour to the different personalities in our group. I definitely recommend that you take this tour with her.

Paola was a wonderful host. I don’t know where else I could’ve gathered all of the history and cultural perspective that she shared. It was fortuitous to have this experience early in my trip because it added so much richness and context to the places I visited, the people I met and conversations I was able to have.
