What you'll do

Experience "Aizome" dyeing in the castle town of Himeji and bring home your own special Aizome item!! Aizome is traditional indigo dyeing that has long been loved by Japanese people. In recent years, Aizome products such as jeans and bags are enjoying global popularity, thanks to its anti-bacterial and insect repellent properties, not to mention the stunning deep blue hue, also known as "Japan blue".

This workshop takes place at a quaint Machiya, traditional wooden marchant house, located near the world famous Himeji Castle. First, you'll learn about Aizome including dyeing process and tools. Then, we'll enter my workspace and get started on making your own Aizome item, which you can choose between an eco-friendly reusable bag and stylish stoles (2 of them). Or, you can bring your own stuff such as a bandana or a t-shirt instead, and dye it "Japan blue". I will guide you through step by step as you create unique patterns using string and rubber bands to make an Aizome item that can't be found anywhere else in the world!

While leaving it to dry, you're welcome to browse inside the shop and enjoy looking at carefully handcrafted Aizome products with natural warmth and delicacy.
Other things to note
*If you want to bring a large item to dye, please let us know beforehand as it may incur additional charges.
*You may only bring an item made of either cotton, linen, or silk. (No polyester)

I'm Yoshihiro, the owner of an aizome cotton product shop in Himeji. Since my grandfather started a cotton growing business 130 years ago, my family has been devoted to producing high quality cotton. After graduating from Osaka University of Arts, I began helping my family business, which made me want more people to appreciate cotton. That led me to open a small shop offering not only a variety of aizome products made of completely chemical free cotton, but also aizome dyeing workshops in order for people to discover firsthand the beauty of natural materials such as cotton and indigo.

Where you'll be

Located within walking distance from Himeji Castle, our Aizome shop was established by renovating an old house to recreate the good old Machiya, a traditional wooden marchant house from Edo period. The exposed beam, earthen floors and plastered white walls that remind you of Himeji Castle; both inside and outside of the building is brimming with historic charm and personality.

It was an amazing experience to use the Indigo dying. Our host was very keen to share his passion with us and guide us to create beautiful pieces.
