What you'll do

Covid Update: We will not be able to "make" trail mix at this time. Thank you for understanding. We will still discuss healthy snacks to take and I will provide trail mix, but it is prepackaged.

On our educational nature adventure, you will park at the base of the mountain pass. Here you will make your own trail mix with your choice of nuts, dried fruit and grains; fill your water bottles with sparkling mountain water from our own well. Do you want to learn about the content of the mountain water? You can read the water report and learn about the minerals.

After a brief review of trail safety and etiquette, we will talk about what kind of hike you are wanting, a slower easier ascent through a valley, or a more steep hike up a mountain.

As we hike, be sure to look for deer and elk sheds. There are opportunities to meander through pine and aspen and find a spot to break. This is prime location for a deer to join us. And the chipmunks always enjoy a bit of your trail mix.

After the break, we will head back to the start, noticing that it is easier to hike back down the mountain
Other things to note
Location is a beautiful 40 minute drive from Gunnison, and 20 minutes from Lake City. If you are needing overnight camping, arrangements can be made.

Spending my childhood years in the north woods of Wisconsin instilled a love for nature and long walks in the wilderness. As an adult I have been hiking and enjoying the Rocky Mountains. The hiking paths provided are in my own backyard, so I am extremely familiar with the terrain.

I am a certified teacher in four states, and currently a professor at a local university.

Where you'll be

The location is a small mountain valley in the Rocky Mountains Wilderness. The views include the river valley, cattle ranches, and the historical Gate of the Lake Fork of the Gunnison. Section 66 is one of the most coveted hunting sections in Colorado due to the prize elk bulls and cows.

The hike travels into the Bureau of Land Management, just west of the Powderhorn Wilderness.

It was wonderful experience. She made us feel safe with her knowledge and patience with hiking guidelines & tips on hiking. Making the trail mix was fun & simple to do instead of buying store bought salty stuff. We are newbies and she gave us good foundation to further our hiking abilities.
