What you'll do

Explore the history, the Must-Sees and secret gems of Christianshavn

The official birth-year of the picturesque district of Christianshavn is 1618 and its 400-year history has seen it change from a small, independent borough, where no-one wanted to live, to one of the capital's most attractive districts. From an ill-reputed cesspool of disease and poverty to a trendy and gentrified café latte-haven - with its very own laid-back atmosphere.

Situated in the stream between the city and the island of Amager, the early development of Christianshavn was slow, but with promises of free building grounds and tax exemption, gradually merchants and noblemen started building here. Christianshavn escaped the fires and bombings in the 18th and 19th century, that cleared most of the old buildings in the rest of Copenhagen. So this is where we find some of the oldest houses in the city.

We will see them, hear the fascinating stories and visit places you would never find on your own.

The tour ends - either at one of the oldest playgrounds in Denmark, placed on a bastion in the only preserved section of Copenhagens old fortifications, or at the Our Savior's Church where I'll challenge you to climb the legendary spiral-tower.
From here it's only a few minutes walk back to the center - or to the "hippie-district" of the Freetown Christiania.
Other things to note
Though it's a 2½ hour tour, the distance covered is short, and we will remain within easy walking distance of the center. We will do a few indoor stops and break for refreshments midway.

After a decade of teaching history, Danish and social studies, in 2014 I decided to quit my job and start doing what I always loved the most – telling stories and sharing my passion for this wonderful city of mine.
Though I know every inch of the city, there is still new discoveries every day – and new, curious people to engage with.
A vast network allows me to offer access and treats you would struggle to find on your own.

Wow! No other words to describe it, I learned so much on this tour (Christianshavn) - Mads heard that I was learning Danish, he conducted the tour in Danish but in a way I was able to understand and follow - if you enjoy history and discovering new things around Copenhagen then Mads’ tours is for you.

This tour was very intimate. We loved it that way. Even my 13 yo daughter appreciated it. Loved the stories and back stories about the spots we visited. Charmed by the courtyards we entered. Mads kept things “real”. No sugar coating about the history of little Amsterdam. Would highly recommend this tour.

This was an outstanding tour!! Mads takes you through a thorough history of the development of Christianshavn, highlighting notable figures who built and/or shaped the trajectory of the area and the logistics of developing a coastal city like Copenhagen. He touched on seemingly everything; yet, I know he could have gone on for longer with all the facts and tidbits that he had stored inside his head! One of my favorite parts was visiting the hidden courtyards which to the untrained eye seem private yet are some of the most beautiful parts of Copenhagen. I wouldn’t have explored this area without Mads’ tour, and I would have missed gaining a more nuanced understanding or Copenhagen as a whole. Mads was also open to questions outside of the scope of the tour, and evidently knows his history. I highly recommend!!
