What you'll do
We’ll begin our hike at the trailhead in Harrison Park, the “jewel in the crown” of Owen Sound. We’ll scale the Niagara Escarpment and wind through the Grey Bruce Arboretum, where we can count up to 60 different species of local and exotic trees. Here, we’ll cross a picturesque footbridge spanning the Sydenham River. During the spring and fall, this is an excellent vantage point to watch steelhead salmon and rainbow trout as they battle upstream. From here, we connect with the Bruce Trail, the oldest and longest footpath in Canada. We’ll meander along the babbling Sydenham, then pass through some spectacular geology as we twist and weave through rocky crevices, hug limestone cliffs, and climb over ice-age boulders. Soon, we will arrive in the Inglis Falls Conservation Area, an Ontario Certified Model Forest. There are ancient eastern white cedars here that are more than 600 years old! The highlight (and reward!) of our hike, Inglis Falls is an 18-metre-high cascade waterfall. The erosive power of the water has carved a deep gorge at the base of the falls. On a clear day you can see down the valley into the City of Owen Sound and out to the harbour.
