What you'll do

Skip the long lines of people waiting for the cable car and save your ticket money. Have more fun, plus some exercise -- feel the accomplishment of arriving to the summit on your own two feet!

Experience the most well-known natural landmark in Rio in a new, adventurous way. Most people take the cable car, but you can hike up the lesser-known trail to the top, seeing the beautiful ocean view that others do not.

Make a special memory with the hike that includes awesome photos of you on your adventure with the incredible ocean and mountain background. Your friends will be jealous!

We will begin by meeting in General Tibúrcio square, the statue in front of Praia Vermelha (Red Beach). You might want to come early to see the beach!

The hike starts on a level trail along the ocean. Then we start the trail ascending the iconic Sugar loaf mountain. The view gets better and better as the climb gets steeper, and along the way I will stop by the best spots for you to admire the view and take beautiful pictures. With this view, you will also see Rio de Janeiro's history. Take a look at the forts, and imagine Portuguese forces protecting Guanabara Bay from invaders in the Portuguese Colonial times.

In the middle of the route, we come across a short vertical rocky stretch, where we use climbing equipment. I provide all the climbing equipment necessary for that (harness, rope, helmet). I will make sure you feel safe -- nothing to worry about, you are secure.

We then traverse to the other face of the mountain which will present a completely different panoramic view. Shortly after, you will reach the summit just in time for a beautiful, unforgettable and rewarding sunset, finishing the experience around 6pm.

To descend, we take one free cable car to Urca Hill where you could eat or have a coffee and then you have options to go to ground level - a 15-minute hike down, or a cable car (R$39 ).

I love the mountains and find myself happiest on the hills. I am a hiker and a rock climber with nearly 12 years of experience. I grew up in this area. Sugarloaf is my backyard and I have the privilege of sharing some of Rio de Janeiro's most amazing locations. I’m a professional climber, outdoor enthusiast and completely in love with Rio de Janeiro. I've climbed and lived in a few different countries, including in Australia and Europe.

I would love to show to this gorgeous aspect of this city, nature which combines the mountain and sea and a little be about its history.

Where you'll be

We will hike Sugarloaf Mountain and on the descent by cable car, stop at Urca Hill Natural Monument (World Heritage Site declared by UNESCO in 2012) . The monument is located in the charming neighborhood of Urca, near where the first settlement of the city of Rio de Janeiro was made.

Because of an injury, Sergio put us in the very capable hands of Andrew who was just great! It felt like he made a realistic assessment of our skill level and I trusted him implicitly to guide me through the challenges of this, at points somewhat difficult, hike. Andrew was open, friendly and a pleasure to talk to. His expertise is obvious and I never felt unsafe. A truly unique experience with a wonderful guide!

Too-notch experience with an expert guide (Gabriel) who, in addition to being a climbing pro, was trilingual (Portuguese, English, Spanish) and full of positive energy. He accommodated all skill levels, including one person in the group with no prior experience, but also made it fun for the more seasoned/adventurous folks. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a fun adventure to the top of sugarloaf!

Why take the cable car up when you can climb around the other side of the mountain and get views that no one else is able to see? Wear shoes with a good tread and trust your guide - you will reach the top safely and full of pride!
