Hi, I'm Makoto. I love cooking and gardening. I would like foreign visitors to have a unique experience though cooking in the local part of Japan. I not only cook normal Japanese home dishes, but also create my original dishes using local ingredients. I finished working as an English teacher at high school after 19 years, and started this cooking class at home.

Where you'll be

The cooking class is held at my modern Japanese house in Miyazaki City. Before the class, we walk around the neighborhood together to visit a local shrine and harvest fresh vegetables in my mother's kitchen garden. My mother is living in a traditional lifestyle, so it must be fun for foreign visitors to take a look at her life.

Makoto was an amazing host. She was flexible on the timing as she knew we had to drive nearly 3 hours from Takachiho to reach her place. We had a wonderful experience learning more about Japanese culture through our chats and of course, through preparing the food. We got to meet Makoto’s son, second daughter and cat too!

This was the best Airbnb Experience we've ever attended. Makoto-sensei was accommodating right from the start and it was a breeze to get all the necessary information and to schedule our cooking lesson. Our questions we're almost instantly answered and made the whole pre-booking experience as easy as 1-2-3! Makoto-sensei invited us into her lovely home and we felt welcome from start to finish. Her home is nestled next to a gorgeous forest so we enjoyed the sounds of nature while cooking. The setting couldn't have been more perfect. We were able to learn new skills and Makoto-sensei gave us the freedom to challenge ourselves while preparing the dishes. She also went above and beyond to obtain an out of season ingredient for a local treat that we wanted to make. To call it a "cooking lesson" doesn't do it justice, it truly was a great "cooking experience!" We're confident that other guests will experience the same level of hospitality that we did and we cannot recommend this experience enough to travelers around Kyushu! In our book, it's a 'must do' experience for everyone!

I highly recommend this cooking class. Where else in Japan can you go to get a truly authentic Japanese cooking experience other than someone’s own home? During this cooking class we walked around to a near by shrine while learning about some history of the location. It was also really cool to pick veggies from the garden in which we would later use to make our food. I am by no means a great cook, but the dishes I made today motivated me to try replicating the dishes for my friends. After picking the vegetables from the garden it also made me inspired to want to start a garden of my own someday. Not only did I learn how to make several new, Japanese specific dishes but I feel like I also made a new friend in the process. Thank you so much.

The cooking class with Makoto was amazing! Her home and neighbourhood are beautiful and she is so friendly and welcoming. As a first time tourist in Japan it was nice to be taken for a quick tour around the neighbourhood to get a real feel for how the locals live. Learning to cook tempura and roll sushi was really fun, not too difficult and we especially enjoyed eating it after as everything turned out so delicious! In addition to recipes and techniques we also learned a bit about Japanese culture and etiquette which was so interesting. I would recommend Makoto's cooking class to anyone who wants to learn how to make delicious Japanese food and wants a unique and immersive experience of Japanese lifestyle.

A wonderful experience in a beautiful home! Makoto was a great host, with perfect English and extensive knowledge of Japanese food and culture. We made a variety of delicious traditional dishes, made easy by Makoto's instructions, which she also sent to us afterwards so we could make it again at home. Would recommend - we'll definitely be visiting again to make something else when we come back!
