What you'll do

Our Nature Connection Adventures are designed for folks seeking a unique outdoor experience in our beautiful mountain town. We’ll begin by exploring our house and yard, which we are transforming into a sustainable, regenerative, permaculture paradise. We will then explore the San Bernardino National Forest on trails known only to locals that begin right outside our door - no crowded trails or parking issues! During our adventure, we’ll take in stunning views from these trails and get up close and personal with native wildlife.

We're all about customizing our experiences to the wants and needs of our guests and the amazing changing seasons on our mountain. I have extensive knowledge of the plants and animals we are likely to encounter and will be happy to share that knowledge with you and/or to quietly take in the natural beauty we will encounter on our nature saunter.

I am co-founder of Hilltop Education Connections and being a nature guide is central to who I am.

As a child, I loved playing in nature. My love of nature and sharing what I’ve learned with others inspired me to get a PhD in science education at UCB. I have been a public-school teacher in CA, professor in NYC, and Education Director at NeXT (with Steve Jobs). After that, I moved to The Farm, an intentional community in TN, and began taking children and families on nature adventures as a teacher at, and principal of, The Farm School and as Program Director of the Kids to the Country program.

Since moving to Idyllwild, I've been leading nature experiences with children and families, taking in the stunning views and amazing wildlife inhabiting our hills. As the great sage, Jerry Garcia used to say, "what a long strange trip it's been."

Where you'll be

We love where we live and are excited to share the natural beauty that surrounds us. We are developing our yard into a regenerative, sustainable, permaculture paradise. The San Bernardino National Forest begins where our yard ends and is both beautiful and serene, offering stunning views of Tahquitz Rock, Diamond Valley Lake and panoramic views of the surrounding area. And the plant and animal diversity along the trails is amazing!

I had a lovely experience with Peter and would highly recommend this for anyone who either already loves and is fascinated by the natural beauty of Idyllwild and the San Jacinto Mountains, or is exploring the area for the first time. We also talked permaculture and more for hours as we walked and took in the gorgeous views, and I didn’t even realize how much time had passed! Peter put a lot of thought into tailoring it to the interests I expressed when I signed up, and has lots of knowledge and great stories to share. Thank you for a wonderful time, Peter!

Fantastic experience catered to your interest. You'll get the personal attention, knowledge of the wilderness, and amazing panoramic views. I don't think we ran into any other hikers in our 3 hour tour.

Peter was a pleasure to be around, very knowledgeable about the area, plants animals etc. Brought 2 thirteen year old boys and 8 year old girl. He taught them a lot about the trees and plants, kids said he didn’t bore them with the way he explained which is huge for kids. He made sure to give time to the older boys to climb rocks and be boys but also assured the little girl was comfortable in the areas of the hike and had her time to climb and build confidence with out pressure. The hike is 3hrs and the kids were done and tired after (yes), over all a very nice experience :)

Peter is a great guide and teacher. He led us through a wonderful wilderness walk in a National Forest that is literally in his backyard. Our young kids (age 4 and 7) felt totally at ease with Peter, and he taught us about the local environment in a way that helped us see the land in new ways & understand how it is all connected. I highly recommend his tour!

Peter was so great with the kids! (4 & 6) We were grateful for all his knowledge at the beginning of our stay so we could notice the details he taught as we hiked and adventured on our own. It is a great way to learn about the area in a beautiful setting.

You can tell, within the first five minutes, that Peter really loves the place that he lives. This passion comes across in every word when he is sharing his immense back yard that is Idyllwild. if you are in the area, and have the time, I would recommend taking a walk with Peter and seeing the mountains through his eyes.
