What you'll do

Loved one of our classes and ready to take your woodworking skills to the next level? Join us in the wood shop to make a one-of-a-kind cutting board that’s all about creativity and craftsmanship. You’ll start by picking out pieces of colorful wood and arranging them into a beautifully-patterned board. From mahogany to poplar to yellow heart, all of our wood is natural — no stains or dyes. Glue your pieces together and then we’ll then move through a succession of power tools to plane down the board and cut it to size. Finish it off with some hand-sanding and the most satisfying part: oiling it to make the colors shine. Whether you're a Bay Area native or visiting for the first time, experience for yourself what makes this place special: creative people in creative spaces adding small pieces of beauty to the world. This level 2 workshop teaches you a number of more advanced power tools, including the planer and table saw. We ask that you take one of our level 1 classes first.
Other things to note
Wear comfortable shoes and clothes ready for some sawdust!

Nine years ago I founded Wood Thumb, a wood shop where we've designed and sold hundreds of thousands of high-quality wood products across the globe. Our clients have included big-name retailers such as Anthropologie, Williams Sonoma and Urban Outfitters. But my true passion is not production — it's sharing the gift of woodworking with people who don't have the knowledge, tools or belief in themselves to build something with their hands. I started crafting from wood as a kid and have been embedded in San Francisco's creative maker community for more than 15 years.

From strips of wood to a beautiful, finished piece in roughly 3 hours. Who would have thought I could do it? The proof is the board I took home with me. I have attended 3 of Christopher’s workshops in the past few months and I walked away feeling proud of myself each time. Christopher provides very clear instructions and I felt kinda comfortable using all those power tools. Safety is not an issue, he makes sure to go over these and he is also around all the time. As a woodworking beginner, I just need a little more time to warm up to having that much power in my hands.
