What you'll do

We will explore and photograph the appropriately named Wild Basin in Rocky Mountain National Park. We will hike along the North Saint Vrain Creek, and stop along the way to photograph several waterfalls (including Copeland Falls, Calypso Cascades and Ouzel Falls).

Bring your tripod and a polarizer filter, and I will demonstrate my techniques for capturing waterfalls and other moving water in a variety of lighting conditions, and help you capture great silky water photographs in a less traveled portion of the park.

The full hike to Ouzel Falls is about 5.5 miles (9 km) round trip, with just under 1,000 foot elevation gain. For those not able to do the full hike, we will do a more leisurely hike to Calypso Cascades (about 3.6 miles round trip, and about 700' of elevation gain), which still takes you deep into a beautiful area, with multiple falls, and wildflowers in season.

Then length of the trip will depend on the hiking abilities of the group, weather, and how much photography we want to do along the way, but is typically 6-8 hours.

Other things to note
Please prepare for any weather contingency, as the weather in Rocky Mountain National Park can be fickle. Tours will happen rain or shine! (Although we my not get to Ouzel Falls if there is stormy weather.) Cloudy/rainy weather can be good for waterfalls photos!

Where you'll be

We will make several stops along the way, including a stop at each of three beautiful and unique waterfalls: Copeland Falls, Calypso Cascades (which is really a series of multiple cascading falls), and Ouzel Falls, where if you are lucky, we will see Ouzels dipping in and out of the water.
