What you'll do

This course is ideal for beginners or those wishing to improve their leather craft skills. There is a choice of a card wallet, change pouch, glasses case or passport cover to make and a range of beautiful coloured dye to add to your vegetable tanned, full grain leather.

You will learn how to:
Cut leather from a pattern
Prepare for stitching
Hand sew leather using saddle stitch
Set rivets
Use leather dye
Use a variety of traditional leatherwork tools

This is an intensive one day course, and it is a great introduction to working and sewing with leather. At the end of the day, you will have gained so many new skills and you will have made yourself a beautiful new leather case.

The courses run from 9.00am to 5.00pm including a 30 minute break for lunch and plenty of tea, coffee and buscuits. We keep numbers down to 5 people to ensure one to one attention.

By the end of the course, you will have the knowledge to make your own simple leather creations or repair an item that needs a little TLC.
Other things to note
Wear suitable clothing that you don't mind geting dye on.

I run a leather craft business from my studio at home, making and hand carving leather goods. I also run beginner, intermediate and advanced leather craft courses. I have been a leather and wood craftsmen for 35 years and use traditional techniques and tools which I originally developed in New Zealand where I grew up. By the end of the beginners course, students will have the skills needed to do their own simple leather repairs and create simple pouches or wallets from scratch.

Where you'll be

I conduct workshops at my studio in Sheffield. The space makes me feel at home with reminders of the 200 year old miner's hut on New Zealand's West Coast, that I spent 15 lovely years in. This was where my inspiration for leather work really took off.
