What you'll do

Experience true classic sailing on Salem's most elegant and unique Schooner - The Historic When and If. We board 15min prior to departure from 10 Blaney St, Salem for a 2hr sunset trip which allows guests to help raise sail, take a turn at the helm or relax and enjoy your trip.

We are a sailors through and through, so once out of the Marina we raise sail, turn off the engine and allow our guests to experience sailing in its truest form. Each trip our captain takes the best route on the water to see a awe-inspiring sunset while taking advantage of the wind and swell direction for an optimal experience.

The When and If was originally built for General Patton and has a long history in the Salem Sound waters, we love sharing her story and historical significance so please don't hesitate to ask! We also invite any questions about how the boat operates and what it takes to sail a Schooner, and we love to share our local knowledge of Salem Sound and its surrounding waters and ocean-life.

We return to the dock two hours after leaving, and our guests will depart from the same location they from which they boarded the When and If.

Captain Seth Salzmann - A keen sailor who has been taking guests sailing for over a decade and had his captains license even longer! All this experience has given him outstanding knowledge of the how to read the weather, the water and the wind. In 2015 Seth bought an 80ft Historic Schooner - the glorious “When and If”, an all-wooden yacht built in 1939 for General George S. Patton and designed by John Alden. Having realised his dream of owning “When and If”, him and his younger brother Captain Dylan spend their evenings sailing her around the beautiful Salem Sound, taking guests to the best spot in town to enjoy the sunset - from the water!

Where you'll be

We sail out of 10 Blaney St, located near when Salem Ferry. Once leaving the wharf we head out to to the beautiful Salem Sound waters. We sail all around the harbor - in between islands and along the wonderful historic shoreline. Keep your eyes looking out for whales, porpoises and other sea-life!

This is a great experience: the historic ship is expertly crewed, and we felt safe and relaxed the entire time. The cruise out into the ocean was beautiful and feeling the waves beneath you once the motor is off is an irreplaceable experience.

The crew was very professional and knew what they were doing. It was a tad bit cold so they supplied us with blankets. I got a bit sea-sick (it was rocky and choppy) and they kept checking in on me as well as suppling some ginger beer with some crackers. Very sweet people! Please take this opportunity when visiting Salem to check these guys out.

The sunset cruise on the "When and If" was lovely. The weather was not clear, but very breezy, so we experienced a good sail. It was fun to be able to attempt to hoist a sail, and also watch the crew manipulate the sails and work together. Good directions for finding the schooner and accurate details of what would be provided. The crew members were friendly and information shared was interesting. My only criticism would be that a bit more information be provided about the islands, the area, or the schooner itself. Thanks!
