What you'll do

Just south of Mount Desert Island, the Cranberry Islands offer a quiet paddling destination away from the crowds of Mount Desert Island, but with MDI’s mountains as a backdrop. On this trip for paddlers with some experience, we’ll start with a safety briefing and then launch from Northeast Harbor. We’ll paddle along shores lined with century-old rusticators’ ‘cottages’ as well as some wild, undeveloped stretches of rocky bluffs as we loop around Bear, Sutton and Little Cranberry Islands. We’ll visit the village of Islesford, where there’s a restaurant and small museum, and if time and conditions allow, we’ll get out to the lighthouse on Baker Island, a remote part of Acadia National Park.

Expect to paddle 8 to 10 miles, depending on conditions and the desires of the group. Along the way I can offer some instruction to maximize your effectiveness and enjoyment - it's okay if you've never paddled on the ocean - just be ready for a little exercise. We'll take a break on an island every hour or so, and we'll have lunch either in town or on a stone beach. We'll return to the launch as MDI's mountains turn golden in the late afternoon light (weather permitting)
Other things to note
Guests will paddle single, sit-inside sea kayaks unless we make other arrangements ahead of time. In case of bad weather or rough conditions, we may either cancel or seek a more sheltered locale

Where you'll be

We'll launch from the rusticator enclave of Northeast Harbor and paddle past Bear Island for a glimpse of the lighthouse there. We'll check-out a massive osprey nest perched on a rocky spire beside Sutton Island, and linger in Islesboro, the village on Little Cranberry, where there's a restaurant and museum. Time allowing, we'll get out to Baker Island to see the lighthouse.

The trip exceeded my expectations. Michael adjusted the route and the stops along the way to the preferences of his guests. He offered instruction where needed and helpful paddling tips, always in a friendly manner. He shared his knowledge of the local life, both the humans and the animals. We were never rushed. A perfect trip.

What a fantastic first time experience to sea kayaking! My girlfriend and I had done some canoeing/kayaking but only in lakes. Sea kayaking requires a skill set we could not have done on our own. Our guide Michael could not have been more perfect. Not only does he have the knowledge, but he is also a great teacher. We wanted an all day sea kayaking trip that involved more kayaking and less "hanging around", and this was it! A perfect balance of getting breaks on islands and exploring them, and actually kayaking. Other great thing about this trip, no crowds! Hard to find in Acadia at times. This day was a huge highlight of our vacation! If we ever come back to this area of Maine, we will for sure be looking up Michael again for a sea kayaking trip.
