What you'll do
Our experience begins at the beach, on the famous North Shore of Oahu. I will explain the harvesting and preparing of coconut palm leaves. We will then weave a beautiful basket that you can take home with you and enjoy for years to come. I offer more advanced classes for those wishing to learn how to weave a multi-tiered basket or a calabash bowl. I also have basic and advanced lei making experiences. I enjoy teaching others how to use the local Hawaiian foliage to create many beautiful and useful items.

Aloha, I have lived on the North Shore of Oahu for over 15 years. I have a lot of experience making lei, lei haku, lei po'o, Tahitian hip hei, Ti leaf skirts, coconut palm baskets, and about anything to do with the Hawaiian tradition of using flowers, feathers, and shells as adornments. I really enjoy sharing my knowledge to others young and old.
Where you'll be
You will be visiting one of the most famous beaches and surf breaks in the world where we will create a beautiful basket from fresh local coconut palms.
What a unique experience this was! Kawai was extremely knowledgeable and taught us how to weave on our own. My girlfriend has already started collecting coconut leaves and has started weaving on her own. Anyone can do this after a few attempts, Kawai made sure of that with her skills. We truly connected with the host, and it was a joy sitting there for an hour or so with her. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for something out-of-the-ordinary.

Kawai never showed up. My daughters (4 and 8 years old) and I waited at the specified meeting spot (a bus stop) then when she didn’t show up we walked to the address at was given for the experience site. I messaged Kawai 3 times while we were waiting and never got a response. It was a real bummer to look forward to learning to weave a palm basket only to be completely let down and never even be contacted by the host to cancel. I wish I could write a good review—if only we had gotten to have the experience!
