What you'll do
This walking tour includes some of London's most famous landmarks, but it also takes in hidden alleyways and historical details that are hard to find without expert guidance. We will begin at Barbican station and walk towards Shakespeare's former lodgings on the northern fringes of the City. We will see some of the most important buildings and localities of the city that the playwright inhabited, including places where he lived and worked. Eventually we will make our way over to Blackfriars, the site of the indoor playhouse where Shakespeare's late plays were performed, and where he purchased a property in 1613.
As a literary scholar and historian, I can show you how the buildings, spaces and people of London found their way into Shakespeare's famous works and shaped his plays. This tour will give you a deeper understanding of Shakespeare, his works, and the world around him at the start of the seventeenth century.
Other things to note
This walk covers ca. 3 miles/5 km and involves stairs; please wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for all weather. Please arrive a few minutes before the scheduled time so we can depart promptly.

Hi I'm Alexander, a London historian and Shakespeare expert with a PhD in English Literature. My research is focused on the historical contexts of Shakespeare's plays, and how London as a place shaped the works that were written to be enacted there. I possess in-depth knowledge of Shakespeare's life in London, Elizabethan and Jacobean drama, and London history in general.
I can help you discover Shakespeare's London at first hand, including hidden historical gems that you will not find in guide books. I have years of experience from researching the period and sharing the wonders of London's history with visitors and locals alike.

Unique and thought-provoking tour. All these narrative and antidotes on Shakespeare uncovered a picture of the times when numerous writers and poets were born and flourish. Alexander is no doubt an expert on the English literature and London history. I will recommend this experience to others without any reservations.

We had an amazing time walking through the streets of London with Alex. I'm a Shakespeare enthusiast and I had been to London many times, but he took us to spots that I wouldn't have known even existed. It was a very enriching experience as he also took the time to answer my questions. Seeing old maps of what London looked like back then while standing at the historical sites was also fascinating. Can't recommend this tour enough!

Alexander found the two of us easily and got us to know a little about each other during the tour, tailoring his tour to us. The walk was not hurried nor too busy, and he happily went longer than the scheduled two hours to show us more, allow us some photos and answer our questions. My theater major niece expressed great satisfaction with this worthwhile venture.
