What you'll do

Nestled in the southern Alps, the Mercantour National Park is world-famous for its natural scenery, which includes magnificent peaks and dozens of lakes, alpine meadows and forests. The local fauna is also an interesting highlight: you may get to spot chamois, mountain goats (ibex), marmots and even wolves!

The Fenestre Lake and Pass is one of the most famous hikes in the park. Just 1.5 hours from Nice, you already get to see the road that winds up through beautiful medieval villages and reaches an altitude of 1,800m (about 6,200ft) in the heart of the park.

I’ll guide you through the Madone de Fenestre Valley, which is surrounded by an impressive alpine landscape, including some of the highest peaks in the Mercantour Park. We’ll see an incredible diverse alpine flora and fauna all around us! I’ll also tell you about the area’s rich history, with testimonies from prehistoric times, the Middle Ages and more recent defensive forts from the World Wars.

We will even cross the border into Italy to enjoy the views on the Italian side of the park.

I’m a local to the area and would love to share all of its secrets with you. Join me and discover this beautiful corner of southern France.
Other things to note
No special experience is required to join this hike but be ready to walk for around 4 hours (400m vertical gain).
