What you'll do
We'll meet at the Haarlem train station to start the tour and pick up the rental bikes.
We'll then ride north to one of the surrounding villages where we will stop at a lookout tower on the top of the dunes. It's the highest point in this part of the Netherlands where you can look over the North Sea and Haarlem. And Yes! You will have to climb hills on your bike on this part of the tour!
We'll continue into one of the largest national parks in the country and stop at a beautiful lake used by the locals for swimming.
From here, it's a short ride to a 17th century country estate with great photo opportunities and also have a chance for a drink break.
Then we go back into the dunes, park the bikes, and walk through the forest to visit a WW2 anti-tank wall and bunker complex.
The next stop is a working windmill where you can explore 4 different levels and shop in the country store. There is also a gnome colony in this forest!
We then head back into Haarlem to see another quaint little windmill and a great example of a Dutch polder - where water is pumped out of a swamp to form grazing land for cattle.
The tour ends at the station.
Other things to note
This is an active experience which includes biking approximately 25 kilometers round trip. PLEASE NOTE: There are several hill climbs on this bike route. Good shoes and rain gear are advisable.

Hi! I'm Dan, an American expat living in Haarlem for over 16 years. My love of bicycling, hiking, and exploring have helped me discover many local hidden gems just outside of the beautiful old city of Haarlem. I can help you experience the real Holland, behind the scenes and far away from the guidebooks and throngs of tourists. This is an active tour where we'll bike through the Dutch countryside, exploring villages, lookout points, national parks, hidden lakes, working windmills, a 17th century country estate, and WW2 German bunkers.
