What you'll do

Sunlight is the first thing that comes to mind when we think about “the south” and it’s so deeply rooted in its visual culture that separating the two is no easy task. This idea of “the sunny south” has been consistently and creatively adapted to anything, really: restaurants, grocers, contractors, marketeers, tourism at large, and if we extended this narrative further back, traditional occupations too.
Life in the south has had to be managed around the notion that the sun is your forever relative and it’s not going anywhere. This applies to people’s behaviours, lifestyle and most importantly housing. The architecture of southern cities is the result of this constant equation and also the reason for its uniqueness and authenticity. Landmarks are often the result of a dominating aesthetic (renaissance, baroque, rococo, neoclassical, …) but it’s the lesser-known and more authentic equipment of a city that allows us to navigate this idea.
This walk was, then, elaborated as a playground for all-this-Faro: its exclusive architecture and culture at the best time to explore it—the sunset. All combined with simple hassle-free history lessons that allow us to focus entirely on the relationship between the city and its light rather than the usual chronological map of events.

Born and raised in the city; have lived here for the longest part of my life. The food is great, the weather is priceless but growing up I only cared about finding the best way to go around it. I believe this is what got me into majoring in Art & Architecture History and why I might be just the right person for this walk, aside from my sense of humour. But that's just my guess. Where you'll be

Faro’s authentic image has to do with two things: sunlight and modernism. This walk focuses on the former while also giving you a glimpse of the latter. If you’re looking for authenticity rather than the usual walking history tour, look no further. This is the walk that will provide you everything you need to go around the city and get to know its unique culture, lifestyle and forms.

I had a wonderful tour with Éll. He's extremely knowledgeable, passionate about not only the architecture but also the history attached with the building we toured. I'd recommend the walk not only if you're into architecture but also if you're into knowing more about the city and its history!

Dear Èll, thanks for that great and refreshingly different walking tour. We enjoyed your informative talk and learned a lot about architecture. After the warm and pleasant sunset light we had a tasty and authentic Portugiese dinner in one of the restaurants you recommended to us. Next time in Faro we will try the next tour! Stay passionate! We went on a tour with a 9 y.o. boy and even for him the walk and excursion were captivating! No boring descriptions and random dates as it sometimes happens with history of art, very insightful and gives you a great overview! Ell is a a perfect guide, knowledgeable about the local architecture, attentive, nice and adapting to the group. He also gave us lots of hints and tips re local cuisine, places to eat and see. Highly recommended!
