What you'll do

I'll collect you from the meeting location and provide a safety briefing and trip outline before beginning our adventure in my 4wd vehicle. During our trip I'll provide commentary about the Wellington region, it’s cultural, natural and geological history, and the natural environment. From the city centre we'll drive upto the Brooklyn wind turbine scenic lookout for stunning panoramic views of Wellington city and the surrounding areas. From there we'll traverse rugged hills above the Wellington south coast with stunning panoramic views across to the Kaikoura mountains on the South Island and beyond. We travel along a private road to Hawkins Hill 500m above sea level, the highest lookout point around Wellington for spectacular unobstructed views across the Cook Strait to the South Island and across to Cape Palliser in the east. To the west we can see the Makara wind farm, and to the north the Tararua mountain ranges. Leaving Hawkins Hill we then enter Long Gully Station following 4wd tracks through rugged private land down, encountering wildlife along the way, to Sinclair Head for a closeup views of the NZ Fur seals. After a drink and snacks, we'll traverse The Gates of Mordor and along the 4wd beach track passing through the Taputeranga Marine Reserve. We'll finish our journey by viewing Wellington city from Mt Victoria, and then back to the city centre.

More tips

This is a 4wd trip around the rugged South Coast of Wellington. The trip is scheduled for daylight hours, usually a morning a start, so differs from my other South Coast trip that is scheduled for guests to enjoy the sunsets. I am flexible around the start time of the trip. Bring warm clothing.
