What you'll do

You won't believe that this forest was actually planned over a century ago. This is no garden; it looks and feels like old-growth forest, yet, amazingly, it's only 1.5 from miles downtown.

Nowhere else on earth can you literally step from one continent's forests to another. Experience trees from around the world while traversing millions years of history.

Well-maintained trails include sections of the famous Wildwood Trail, which lead to Portland's Pittock Mansion and Forest Park (not included in this hike).

The Arboretum is close to several other Portland landmarks, including the Zoo, the Rose Garden and the Japanese Garden. Make a day of it!

Just breathing in the rarefied atmosphere of the amazing Redwood Deck will transform and rejuvenate you. You'll walk taller and feel smarter; it's literally good for your brain!

The hike can be a workout, but it doesn't have to be. Depending on the group, I can usually adapt to your comfort level. Slower paced hikes may last up to 2.5 hours.

Be aware that the Arboretum offers free (or almost free) weekend tours led by volunteers, with a schedule posted on its website. Such visits may focus on single topics (such as fir trees or native plants) and/or cover small portion of the park.

This Experience takes a broader approach and covers more ground, integrating cultural and historical information into a wider regional context.
Other things to note
Other times can be accommodated upon request. Please contact me for more info. Trails include some steep sections, but are generally easy to negotiate. Restrooms available at the MAX station and at the Arboretum's visitor center.

As author of a book based on this hike, a local area expert and college-level (PSU) instructor with 20+ years experience hiking in this iconic Portland landmark, my deep connections give me special insights into this magical place. I enjoy revealing the Wildwood's unique place in the world, its trees and secrets, along with fascinating and fun historical facts about the Portland area. Since I live and work within a half mile of the trail, I am happy to schedule visits on short notice, and have good availability most days. Please don't hesitate to ask for a time that meets your needs. My book, entitled "Walk With Me," is available as an Audible guide with step-by-step directions to guide you on the original version of this hike. It's the next best thing to having me in person! Simply Google: "Walk With Me Arboretum" to find it.

Where you'll be

In a city rich in beautiful parks, the Wildwood Trail through the Arboretum is Portland's crown jewel. In roughly 6,000 steps (~3 miles) we will visit the amazing Redwood Deck, an beautiful platform amid towering, almost century-old trees. We will enjoy a spectacular viewpoint with sweeping views of volcanoes in two states (weather permitting), and I'll relate the dramatic story of the eruption of Mt. St Helens along with other local history.

David will make anyone's Arboretum experience 10x better because he has incredible knowledge about all the trees and stories on how they were introduced. I really enjoyed the stories he had to tell for a few special trees, which made the experience so engaging and interesting! I would highly recommend taking David's tour for anyone who's looking to learn more history about Portland through the Arboretum!

The arboretum has volunteers that take you on a walk through this beautiful space. I would recommend you take the tour with David as you gain much more from the tour with him than if you wander around by yourself. You gain a great mixture of facts and stories. As a bonus I was fortunate David had enough time to recommend so many places for me to visit in Portland and Oregon. I have since visited a number of them and I pleased I did. David thank you for a great walk, your company and information.

Great time learning about things we would have missed if we hadn’t done the trail. Has great recommendations for the rest of the city too!

Words can't say enough of my wonderful experience. I took this trip as an easy walk before I hop on the airplane and it turned out one of the highlights of my North West trip. Divid was very knowledgeable and nice. Trust me, his tour well worth your precious time in Portland. Btw he host rooms on Airbnb too. His house locates in a very mice area.

It was an easy hike and very informative about the arboretum and the tree specimens that the park contains. There were in particular a couple of trees that I had never noticed in going around the arboretum myself, the “loving” tree and the “lightening” tree. David was well informed and a good guide for the trip, and at two hours it was just the right length of time.
