Cob Cottage

Channel the pursuit of pause in this one-of-a-kind earth house. The cozy retreat was hand-sculpted using local and sustainable natural materials, and features a central living space with cantilevered slab stairs leading to the loft bedroom. Guests have access to the entire cottage and surrounding property. We live in the neighbouring house, and are happy to give advice or answer questions to help you make the most of your stay. The neighborhood is quite rural and mostly agricultural with several farms and a small private vineyard. The home is a 10 minute walk from the beach and a 20 minute walk from a family grocery and deli specializing in local organic produce. Mayne Island has a small community bus. Times and routes are limited, particularly in the winter. It will stop at the driveway. We also have an official hitch hiking system with signed Car Stops where you can wait for a ride. Usually you don't have to wait long. We are happy to offer pickup and drop off at the ferry dock as a courtesy to encourage car-free travellers, on days when the community bus is not running. Please let us know ahead of time that you'll be coming without your own transportation, and we will make sure that either we or the community bus (which will drop you off at our driveway) are there to meet you when your ferry arrives. The BC Ferries terminals near Victoria and Vancouver are easily reachable via public transit from their respective airports and downtowns.

He’s communicative and accommodating as we booked last minute and had to check in pretty late. He also provided details about the house in advance that’s easy to follow. Absolutely perfect!! The views from every room were breathtaking and having access to the private beach was a nice way to wind down in the evenings. Dan and Sam were a pleasure as well, super easy to communicate with and proactive in letting us know where was a potential issue with power (everyone turned out fine!). Also enjoyed a few close hiking trails and some yummy food. Overall, a perfect place to have a mix of being active in nature with relaxing and unwinding. Would love to stay here again!

This was our third year in a row staying at Derek’s cabin on Beaver Lake, and we absolutely love it. The property is safe and enclosed, making it perfect for the kids to play freely. Access to the lake is fantastic, and it’s just minutes from the town center of Lake Cowichan. The cabin itself is cozy and inviting — the two-bedroom layout is ideal for a family of four. The backyard is especially magical at night around the fire pit. Derek has been incredibly accommodating, and communication has always been seamless. We’ll definitely be back next year!

We stayed at Wendy’s for two nights after a busy schedule in Vancouver and Victoria as we wanted some quieter time. This lovely suite offered everything we could have wished for with a peaceful location, views of the lake and a spotless and beautifully presented accommodation. Would definitely recommend!
