KAIWA NO SATO This old house is an indigo mansion built in the first year of the Bunsei era (1804) during the heyday of indigo. The main house and the sleeping area (a barn where indigo was stored) have been demolished due to aging, but the historic living room and garden have been preserved to allow guests to experience a little bit of that time, and it is used as a farmhouse inn. In the old days, "Indigofera" grew on the fertile land of the Yoshino River basin in Tokushima Prefecture, bringing great wealth to Tokushima Prefecture (Awa Province). Ancient documents on indigo, including cultural properties, are also available for viewing. Founded in 1957, my grandfather, Eiichi Tanuchi, ran an inn called Aiwasho for the cultural development of Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture. In order to continue to protect its history and traditions, his granddaughter, Kiushuko, reopened the inn under its original name in 2021. Built on the site of Ueno Castle, this inn is a traditional Japanese house with tatami mats on the floor. Please relax in one of the two Japanese-style rooms. The inn is located on a hill overlooking the city of Tanabe, so you can enjoy the morning sun, sunset, and night view. On a calm day, we recommend having tea in a wicker chair on the edge of the hinoki cypress wooden deck, which was made in the image of the moon viewing platform of the Katsura Imperial Villa. The newly installed bath and toilet are spacious and barrier-free, so you can bathe together or use them easily even if you need assistance. We installed popin.aladdin (lighting with projector) in one of the Japanese-style rooms. It projects on the sliding doors You can watch TV, music, movies, etc. Enjoy BGM on YouTube before you go out in the morning. My parents, Kisaku and Shuko Tanai (Japanese), live next to the house, so please let me know if you need anything.

The owner is a local Kumano Kodo guide, so we will do our best to accommodate your questions and advice about walking the Kumano Kodo, as well as pick-up and drop-off when you need it. This spot is perfect if you are looking for a beautiful, peaceful, mountain getaway nearby Hongu Taisha (not walkable/near bus). It is a bit remote and isolated, there is a beautiful river to walk to with a cute local swim spot. While it’d be a long walk to town, Yuki is a wonderful host. She greets you at the bus stop for check in and offers to drive you where you need to be whenever you need to be there. We had her drop us at the shrine and then we hiked to a local onsen and she picked us up there after dinner. She also is a wonderful baker and we had bagels and two types of bread waiting for us in the airbnb! Wifi works well. Place was clean and air conditioned. There were some spiders, but they are not poisonous.

I was a little worried because this Airbnb listing is new, but we’re so thankful that we stayed here. Honestly the pictures don’t do the place justice, it’s so beautiful: a perfect blend of traditional and modern. All the amenities are new and stylish and the hosts couldn’t be kinder. They own a local cafe nearby and I also recommend you spend some time there to enjoy lunch or a coffee, you won’t regret it! I’d also recommend you get some groceries before settling in, because the kitchen is great to prepare some meals in. We were running late, but the host was kind enough to take us to a local grocery store, such great hospitality! The area surrounding is a quiet and peaceful, but it gives you a little taste of the Japanese countryside and gets you away from the “gaijin hordes”. Please come and enjoy a few days here, can’t recommend it highly enough!

The owner replied quickly and helped us contact the car to pick us up as soon as we arrived at the station. It was already 12 o'clock in the morning. Thank you for your help. The next day, the boss personally came from Osaka city to pick us up because of the flight. We were really grateful. The house is in a quiet location and will not be disturbed; hygiene: spotless; location: about 20 minutes by car from the airport, about 30 minutes by subway, but the owner will be responsible for picking you up at the airport, if you drive yourself, it is highly recommended, it is very cost-effective, you can enjoy the surrounding scenery, very comfortable. Communication: The boss is a Chinese student studying in Japan for many years, the communication is very smooth and the boss is very responsive. Space and hardware: There are four rooms, there is plenty of space in each room, there is also a hall, two toilets, dry and wet, and the kitchen also has corresponding kitchen utensils, microwave, etc., and the boss is fully equipped with toothbrush toiletries, bath towels, slippers, etc., the overall space is very sufficient, the building is private, it will not be disturbed by other people, it smells of home. This place was amazing! It is nestled in the mountain with the most spectacular view. The roads are extremely narrow and mostly single lane to the property, however it was completely worth it for the views, peace and tranquility. The photos don’t do it justice. Would love to come back!

Short walking distance to the station. You are between the airport and Osaka, which was ideal for us. Note, if you are 1.90 meters tall, be careful every time you go from one room to another. This is a nice traditional Japanese place, we enjoy it.
