On August 16, 2019, a 40-year-old Japanese house in Tejima, Kumagaya City, was reborn as a farm stay facility. The building has been updated with modern technology, and has highly insulated walls and double glazed windows to withstand the cold "karakaze" winds blowing down from Mt. Akagi and the hot summers of Kumagaya, which boasts the highest temperature in Japan. Less than 20 minutes by car from the south exit of Kumagaya Station. This place, right next to the embankment along the Ara River, has a completely different time flow from the north exit of the station. Welcome to Richard Flavin's Washi House! Richard Flavin (1943–2020) was a Japanese paper artist originally from the US. He studied design in Boston and came to Japan in 1970. He later studied woodblock printing and developed a deep interest in the production of washi. He also cultivated the raw material for washi paper, paper mulberry. We invite those interested in washi paper and art to stay overnight and enjoy this space, reminiscent of a washi paper museum, including these unfinished areas.
