Cob Cottage

Channel the pursuit of pause in this one-of-a-kind earth house. The cozy retreat was hand-sculpted using local and sustainable natural materials, and features a central living space with cantilevered slab stairs leading to the loft bedroom. Guests have access to the entire cottage and surrounding property. We live in the neighbouring house, and are happy to give advice or answer questions to help you make the most of your stay. The neighborhood is quite rural and mostly agricultural with several farms and a small private vineyard. The home is a 10 minute walk from the beach and a 20 minute walk from a family grocery and deli specializing in local organic produce. Mayne Island has a small community bus. Times and routes are limited, particularly in the winter. It will stop at the driveway. We also have an official hitch hiking system with signed Car Stops where you can wait for a ride. Usually you don't have to wait long. We are happy to offer pickup and drop off at the ferry dock as a courtesy to encourage car-free travellers, on days when the community bus is not running. Please let us know ahead of time that you'll be coming without your own transportation, and we will make sure that either we or the community bus (which will drop you off at our driveway) are there to meet you when your ferry arrives. The BC Ferries terminals near Victoria and Vancouver are easily reachable via public transit from their respective airports and downtowns.

I stayed at Shawn's place for 2 weeks while working in Lake Cowichan. The rental is a newer home on a residential street with a beautiful view of the lake from the deck. With a longer stay, I appreciated the well stocked kitchen, comfortable bed and great linens. Instructions for check-in and out were detailed and easy to follow. Shawn was quick to respond from start to finish. I have no hesitation recommending this property and would definitely book again!

We were lucky enough to get to meet Emma as the guest suite is located in the bottom floor of her family home (also with your own private parking and patio/garden space). Emma is so warm and friendly. We loved having the chance to chat and appreciated the helpful local recommendations on walking/biking in the area (Bald Mountain is just down the road, we also hired bikes from Cycle Therapy in Duncan for the Cowichan Valley Trail and ferry to Salt Spring Island from Crofton was also within 45 minutes drive). We saw beautiful elk and even a bear(!) hiking in the local area. The space is very large and well put together with all amenities you need and a wood fired sauna (and cold plunge!) that we very much enjoyed after all the exercise.

This place was a great little home. Very close to the airport and arriving at night, was surprisingly not hard to find at all. All the added touches were amazing and so thoughtful. There were homemade buns on the counter and some eggs in the fridge, as well as other little great nessesities. There are beautiful walking trails near by and a cute little waterfall as well. Would 100% recommend this place to anyone. Nothing bad to say!

We stayed at Wendy’s for two nights after a busy schedule in Vancouver and Victoria as we wanted some quieter time. This lovely suite offered everything we could have wished for with a peaceful location, views of the lake and a spotless and beautifully presented accommodation. Would definitely recommend!
