All about Miami
Planning a vacation in Miami? We’re here to help!
With fabulous Art Deco architecture in an array of candy colors, white sandy beaches lapped by turquoise waters and South Florida sunsets that you can’t help but photograph, this is one beautiful city. But there’s much more to Miami than meets the eye – a cosmopolitan melting pot with buzzing nightlife and a pioneering ‘foodie’ culture, the city has been heavily shaped by arrivals from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Mexico and other Latin American countries who now call Miami home. In recent years, the city has undergone a creative renaissance and has emerged as a darling of the art world. Not only is it home to some of America’s most exciting galleries, it is also the host of Art Basel Miami, an annual fair attended by the who’s who of the art world.
The city is easily accessible, with Miami International Airport located just west of downtown. The airport is served by direct flights from cities across America and the world. Boasting year-round sunshine and balmy temperatures, it makes a great year-round destination, although the most popular time to visit is in the winter, from December to March. Avoid the peak summer months if you dislike humidity, and be aware that hurricanes are possible from August to October.
Explore Little Havana
Cuba's storied contribution to Miami’s vibrant reputation is plain to see in the city’s Little Havana district, which lies just west of downtown. For generations Cuban emigres have settled here, creating a neighborhood pulsing with life, from its many colorful art galleries to its busy restaurants. The Latin Quarter's ever-evolving restaurant scene is the perfect place to try a wide range of culinary delicacies: not only Cuban specialties like Ropa Vieja (shredded beef) and fried plantains but also authentic Mexican tacos and Venezuelan arepas. Afterwards, buy a Cuban cigar from one the many kiosk windows and join the domino-playing locals for an after-dinner drink.
Discover Miami’s Art Deco architecture
In Miami, the Art Deco style assumed a somewhat more laid-back, and less ornamental, appearance than that seen in its northern manifestations, such as New York’s Chrysler and Empire State buildings. Nonetheless, the principles of Art Deco are still clearly recognizable in Miami’s pastel-colored architecture. Just cruising along Ocean Drive in South Beach you'll pass some of the greatest Deco gems the city has to offer, from hotels like the Delano, the Cavalier, the Leslie, the Cardozo, the National and the Raleigh to Gianni Versace's former home, the Villa Casa Casuarina, and Hoffman's Cafeteria. If you want to know more, visit the Art Deco Welcome Center at Lummus Park, before touring the city, so you know what to look out for.
Make time for art
The world's premier art fair, Art Basel has a second home in South Florida. Every December it decamps to Miami, where 200 leading international modern and contemporary galleries showcase the work of over 4,000 artists. Even without the striking and thought-provoking art, the whole affair would be quite the spectacle, with its varied stalls, out-sized characters, and big money deals. Although the fair only lasts for a long weekend, there’s plenty to keep art lovers entertained for the rest of the year. The city’s flagship gallery is the Perez Art Museum Miami (or PAMM), which was founded in 1984 and hosts world-class temporary exhibitions, as well as a permanent collection dedicated to the art of the 20th and 21st centuries. Another popular spot is the Rubell Family Collection, which is one of the biggest private contemporary art collections in the United States, and features work by luminaries such as Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Cindy Sherman. For a different perspective on Miami’s art scene, head to the city’s Wynwood District, where the colorful Wynwood Walls showcases the work of the world’s most celebrated street artists.
