About this listing

Most beautiful house downtown Cozumel

The space

Cozumel offers many options to its visitors, but nothing compared to this private residence already famous among the islanders for its façade, distinctive decoration and its main gate with mirrors that originated its popular name of “La Casa de los Espejos” or “The House of Mirrors”. Located downtown only 200 yards from the sea, it allows you to experience the way natives live, the real Mexican cuisine and the music and sounds that permeate the atmosphere every day and night.
The house was built in 1989 by Brazilian architect Douglas Cerqueira Gonçalves, who lived on the island for a few years and actually in the house while building it, having therefore the time to detail everything to a “state of the art” level. The property is just two small blocks away from the sea and from Punta Langosta, the main international pier in town and just three minute away from the town hall and the main square; also walking distance to the bars, restaurants, supermarkets and shopping strip.
The property consists of a beautiful tropical garden with pool and waterfall. It has two unique living spaces, a large two story house at the far end of the property and a totally independent bungalow in the pool area. Each of the three rooms has its own private bathroom and terrace, is fully air conditioned, has ceiling fans, TV/DVD/Sky TV, variety of pillows and high quality cotton linens. You can enjoy the large adjoining terrace to sunbath, morning coffee or afternoon Margaritas.
The garden and pool deserve a special mention, there’s no other garden in Cozumel that offers such a unique atmosphere; it is basically a palm garden with different palm trees, air plants, bromeliad, orchids and other unique plants that can’t be easily found elsewhere in town, combined with beautiful Mayan stone steles and various wood, stone and metal modern sculptures. There are also large trees that create shaded areas for private ambiances. The swimming pool is composed by two tanks, the large one with an extraordinary venetian tile sculpture representing the sacred Mayan serpent and a cascade that falls into the second tank where children or non swimmers can enjoy the fresh water. In case of need there’s also a wheel chair ramp.
Cozumel:
Cozumel is known worldwide for its crystal clear waters and rich underwater reefs and wildlife, but it also has superb white sand beaches and a unique ecosystem full of wetlands and lagoons where you can see a large number of protected species both endemic and migratory. The geographical position of the island together with its surface and underwater wealth couldn’t be ignored by the ancient astrologists and priests who chose it to erect the sanctuary to Ix-Chel, the most important female deity of the Mayan pantheon, goddess of the loom, the earth and fertility, making of Cozumel the most important pilgrimage destination for over a thousand years.
Cozumel has an heterogeneous and diverse community formed by the original locals and people from all over Mexico, the U.S., Canada, several European countries and also from Central and South America, all contributing with their own heritage and best efforts and resources to improve the tourist, human and cultural offer to place the island as one of the most attractive destinations in the Mexican Caribbean.
In 1956, Mexican film director René Cardona shot the movie Un Mundo Nuevo under the waters of Cozumel at what is now known as “Cardona Reef”. In 1957, the film was translated into English and broadcasted over the American television as A New World. Cardona’s movie is often confused with Jacque Yves Cousteau’s 1956 documentary Monde du Silence, but Cousteau’s film was shot entirely in the Eastern Hemisphere, therefore it was Cardona’s film that brought the crystal waters of Cozumel to the attention of the American divers. Cousteau did not visit the island for the first time until the late 1960’s, years after Cozumel’s dive industry was well established. .

Marco's house is a real gem. Great architecture, swimming pool was more than great. Marco's hospitality, including welcome "party", as well as best breakfast we had on the island that Marco brought to us one morning - all added to fantastic 2 weeks. Any issues with the house/pool were immediately dealt with. Overall - very highly recommended house on Cozumel. We will be back!

Marco's home is not like the pictures. It is better! I thought the pool was a tiny plunge pool but there was plenty of room for four of us..and we used it first thing each morning and last thing at night. The lighting is special as is the gorgeous courtyard. Everywhere one turns there is something to delight the senses-from the lush, varied plantlife, to the whimsical artistic pieces (chairs from tree stumps- carved polished pieces placed here and there, their presence merely to provide visual pleasure. ) Indoors there are multiple fans, and the bedrooms had perfect chilly air conditioners. We would blast the air at night and use the extra blankets helpfully provided. The negatives are few. The home is very central and it is not a super quiet place. The separate bungalow which my son used was serenaded each night with loud music from a local bar down the street..like clockwork 6pm to midnight. Reggaeton, salsa, oldies..Our son is 19 and he Loved it. We didnt mind- it added to the quirky charm. If youre a light skeeper and do not use the noise cancelling ac..you will be serenaded by roosters in the am. Again, part of the charm in our opinions. The only true negative for us was accessibility for our son who uses a motorized scooter to go long distances, and crutches for short. Navigating was treacherous at times. It truly is a magical place..but for us, handicap accessible?..not so much. Cannot close this long review without a shout out to Marco, the consummate host. From his welcome guacamole, refried beans, beer, wine, soft (URL HIDDEN) his thorough mapped out advice for his favorite (URL HIDDEN) his availability at all (URL HIDDEN) impeccable host. He treats you like cherished family. One day we hope to return to this beautiful island, and we wont hesitate to consider Marco's home.

Our host, Marco, was very responsive in our communications leading up to our actual stay. Upon arriving, Marco was at the house, welcomed us with open arms, guacamole, bean dip, & chips; he showed us around & gave helpful tips as to restaurants. Throughout our stay Marco was available as helpful; the house was cleaned twice during our stay. The home is comfortable, filled with art, private, a comfortable delight. It is within walking distance to the Spa we visit, restaurants we enjoy, and to the grocery store. Marco's generous sharing absolutely gives you a place to feel at home. Of our times on Cozumel - the House of Mirrors is a gem. The bedrooms are air conditioned, the house has many screened windows and fans for cross ventilation, the pool is great for relaxing after cycling or diving or "just because". The kitchen is well stocked for those enjoying cooking for themselves, too. Each bedroom has a private full bath & there is a bath on the 1st floor, too. We were six guests, and everyone enjoyed the stay immensely.

The house of Mirrors is a wonderful place to spend your vacation. It is a beautiful property, with a very refreshing pool, plenty of space, great location, walking distance to many great restaurants, and it gives you the feel of being a resident of the island. Plus Marco is the best host we have ever had through airbnb, he really is what makes this home special his knowledge of the island is superb, he welcomed us with refreshments and a detailed map of restaurants, beaches, and historical sites. His insights into the island are impeccable every recommendation he offered was spot on. I highly recommend the House of Mirrors if you want to escape the tourists traps and really true feel for the island. Thank you so much Marco for your hospitality, and knowledge. We cannot wait for our next trip to you island!

Marco and his home are both outstanding. He was a fantastic host with amazing recommendations for food and sites! The location could not be better as it is walking distance to many great restaurants and shops. Marco was available at a moment's notice with helpful tips - you could not ask for more. (He even helped us lug our suitcases to the ferry on the way out). Hosts like Marco are why AirBnB works! LOVE Cozumel - fantastic place to visit and explore. We will be back - and we will once again hope to book with Marco and the House of Mirrors.

The pictures do not do it justice!!! The home, pool and garden are even better than in the photos. It's a very big space, very clean and comfortable. The pool is bigger than expected and a nice refreshing place to spend time. Marco was available any time and gave us a lot of tips and tricks for our stay in Cozumel. Great location close to town and easy to get around. Would stay here again and will recommend it to everyone!!

The house is in a great location in town. Lots of restaurants and shopping close by. Marco is a very good host and communicator. He answers questions within minutes. The house needs a bit of updating (new air conditioners) and some comfortable seating. The biggest issue was the noise: crowing roosters and barking dogs. Did not get a full nights sleep the entire time there.

I have worked as a businessman in Europe for 33 years and now retired in this beautiful island where I had built this house in 1989. Living in Cozumel is a privilege and though I intend to go back to "the road", for the time being I'm enjoying the healthy living in the island and I'm quite excited about putting in practice my experience as a world traveller and offer my guests a great stay in Cozumel and the Yucatan peninsula.
