Perfect for a peaceful stay, but still close to the fun. Relax in this zen-like cottage and working bookbindery, walking distance to the best of East Austin. It’s just 1 block from LadyBird Lake trail, and practically on the doorstep of the best restaurants in town, like Launderette & Kemuri Tatsu-ya. Enjoy morning espresso on the private patio space & watch the neighborhood go by. You’ll be able to view my rare book binding equipment, and can even opt to take a class from me during your stay!

The space

The cottage is part living space, part working bookbindery. You’ll have a private, quiet space to unwind, and be walking distance from the best of what makes Austin wonderful, like the hike + bike trail, and dozens of trendy restaurants--ones that are constantly featured in magazines like Bon Appetit.

The house is outfitted with original pieces from esteemed Japanese American mid-century furniture maker, George Nakashima, plus other design pieces that are just as beautiful as they are functional. You’ll notice lots of wabi-sabi design elements, the practice of celebrating the beauty of imperfections.

Sleep peacefully in a Japanese or Western style bed, both outfitted with organic bedding. Then enjoy sitting on the patio on cool Austin mornings, espresso in hand, watching joggers go by, or as a space to wind down with a drink after a night out and while you watch the pedicabbers cycle past the house.

This historic cottage is an Austin Classic on the outside, and has been reinvented as a soothing Japanese cottage on the inside. We think this house combines the best of both worlds, and we can’t wait for you to experience it!

Guest access

You’ll have full access to the bedrooms, living room, kitchen, bathroom, patio, and shared living space. You’ll be able to view the bookbindery equipment, but we rope it off to protect the equipment, much of which is irreplaceable.
Push Pad Entry no worries about lost keys.

Interaction with guests

The house will be all yours, but I’ll usually be nearby if you need anything.

If you want to take a bookbinding class from me, you can! Just let me know in advance and I’ll set it up for you. I’ll teach you how to create your own notebooks, book boxes, or journal from elegant and fine materials.

Other things to note

This house is a working bookbindery, and you’ll have the option to take a class from me while you’re here. I’m a certified in traditional Japanese Bookbinding techniques, and I’m happy to show you my equipment and book samples.

Lindsay's home is very special. It's on a bike path with easy access to downtown activities. The house was spotless and the attention to details, like healthy snacks in the frig, we're appreciated. We feel so lucky to have found this.
