The space

If you’ve ever fantasized about living in a restored barn, this is an opportunity to give it a try. The rental is an apartment in a barn that is attached to the small farmhouse with a shared ell. It is private, yet your hosts are just steps away. The house sits atop a hill overlooking a cove on Vinalhaven, an island 12 miles off shore from Rockland, Maine, accessed by the Maine State Ferry Service. The ferry ride to the island is approximately one hour and twenty minutes, and is a colorful introduction to the island, filled with visitors and locals returning from shopping on the mainland, kids, dogs and shopping carts in tow.
The house is in a working neighborhood - fishermen, caretakers, carpenters, professionals, as well as some summer residents.
There are cove and ocean views from the apartment’s upstairs bedroom, yet it is in a cozy neighborhood just a ten minute walk from Vinalhaven’s tiny waterfront downtown, which has a library, church, a medical center, art gallery, a few restaurants, a good market, a wine and cheese shop and a coffee shop. In the summer there is a weekly flea market and the local fisherman’s co-op has lobsters minutes from the sea. Visitors like to hike the many nature preserves and explore the stony beaches and working waterfront.
Cell phone coverage is limited on the island, but there is wireless internet. A small sunny deck off the open-plan kitchen/dining/living area looks out over the lawn and garden. The kitchen is fully equipped, and there is a beautiful Danish woodstove for use if the nights are chilly. The upstairs bath has a soaking tub with handheld shower.
Please note that after Labor Day the island is much quieter - restaurants may be closed or have more limited hours, etc.

Guest access

The barn apartment has two entrances - thru the French doors that look out on the yard, or its own door in the ell.
We have mountain bikes (male and female sizes) for you to use.

Interaction with guests

We try to give our guests as much privacy as possible, but also to be available to answer questions and suggest places to hike etc.

Other things to note

We don't lock the house.
Please note that occasionally one or more of the ferry trips can be cancelled due to a medical emergency or bad weather. If you absolutely have to be off the island on a certain day, plan accordingly and give yourself extra time. Also, please review how to get on and off the island carefully - the process for doing each differs a bit and requires attention and planning!

Another beautiful, peaceful, restful stay here at Anna + Josh's restored barn. We look forward to it all year. Thanks again for such a lovely visit to one of our favorite spots on the planet.

Coming to Vinalhaven is like stepping back in time. The island is quiet and peaceful. The beauty of the island is around every curve. Everyone on the road waves to you and people on the street greet you wherever you walk. The landtrust on the island provides information about many hikes, talks and expert-led walks. We hiked, swam in the quarry and enjoyed joining others on a landtrust sponsored bird walk. Staying at Georganne's place (with Anna and Josh next door) is comfortable, easy and welcoming. The space has a mixture of antiques and modern furniture and amenities (washer, dryer, privacy, lovely bathroom, solid couch, wonderful and comfortable bed). The windows all bring in the light and atmosphere of the island with sweet views of the harbor, Anna and Josh's lush garden and sounds of the birds feeding in the many birdfeeders in the yard. All that you will need to bring will be your clothes and food you want to prepare. The kitchen has everything you will need including oil, spices and herbs and enough pots and pans and dishes to feed 30 people. :) Not that I suggest that, of course. They have provided everything you might need. The island does have a couple of restaurants if you want to eat out. And, of course serves fresh fish and lobster. (and you can purchase fresh lobster at the co-op and bring them home to prepare for yourself) We had a wonderful time! There is NOTHING negative to say: the apartment is spacious, beautiful and welcoming. The flowers on the table and in the bathroom were the perfect greeting!

As long time renters on Vinalhaven we can assure you that this spot has it all: a beautifully designed and functional, comfortable space, wonderful hosts, and proximity to the village, the harbor and all that lies beyond if you have bikes or a car. Anna and Josh went out of their way to make our stay delightful - they are right next door and yet it felt very private. Their garden is magnificent, and there is a view of the water from the bedroom - we saw fireworks on the 4th of July. We have had pretty good luck with Air BnB, but this is a true gem.

Our host made us feel very welcome. The barn was exactly as it was pictured but more beautiful in person. We cannot wait to visit again!

Anna and Joshua were friendly and accomodating. Anna was very helpful with local tips. She even offered us vegetables from their beautiful garden. The barn is cosy and adorable, well equipped even with oceanview from the bedroom. Walking distance to restaurants, shops and harbour. Vinalhaven is magic! We would defenitely come back.

Anna and Joshua were kind, generous hosts. Anna's communication was responsive and friendly. Once we arrived, she gave us suggestions for walks in the area and one day offered us a zucchini from their beautiful garden (which we were encouraged to make use of). Their barn apartment is absolutely the perfect spot for a weekend or week, solo or as a couple. It's just beautiful in every way, down to the last detail. They have taken care to think of everything, from towels and soaps to hand-made curtains and wood for the stove. The bed is super comfortable. There is space to do yoga upstairs or out on the small deck. We ate many of our meals outside and made use of the small grill. The barn is conveniently located and quiet, with a sweet ocean view from the bedroom---and stunning sunrise and sunsets. We couldn't have imagined a better experience and are already looking forward to coming back next year. Thank you Anna + Joshua!

I am a garden writer and journalist, with a degree in landscape architecture. I recently retired from my job on a local newspaper. I love gardening, sewing and designing clothing and toys, reading and travel. I volunteer at the local library for story hour and crafts, when I'm not off the island. My daughter and son-in-law, Annie and Josh, are both artists, and we bought this house and barn and share the property. My daughter and I also share catering and landscaping jobs. Because I am away a lot, they will be the hosts for visitors and they know all about the hiking and running spots on the island. We all love to cook what we grow and use as much local food as we can grow or procure. We've only been on the island for two years and love introducing others to it.
