If you’ve ever fantasized about living in a restored barn, this is an opportunity to give it a try. The rental is an apartment in a barn that is attached to the small farmhouse with a shared ell. It is private, yet your hosts are just steps away. The house sits atop a hill overlooking a cove on Vinalhaven, an island 12 miles off shore from Rockland, Maine, accessed by the Maine State Ferry Service. The ferry ride to the island is approximately one hour and twenty minutes, and is a colorful introduction to the island, filled with visitors and locals returning from shopping on the mainland, kids, dogs and shopping carts in tow.
The house is in a working neighborhood - fishermen, caretakers, carpenters, professionals, as well as some summer residents.
There are cove and ocean views from the apartment’s upstairs bedroom, yet it is in a cozy neighborhood just a ten minute walk from Vinalhaven’s tiny waterfront downtown, which has a library, church, a medical center, art gallery, a few restaurants, a good market, a wine and cheese shop and a coffee shop. In the summer there is a weekly flea market and the local fisherman’s co-op has lobsters minutes from the sea. Visitors like to hike the many nature preserves and explore the stony beaches and working waterfront.
Cell phone coverage is limited on the island, but there is wireless internet. A small sunny deck off the open-plan kitchen/dining/living area looks out over the lawn and garden. The kitchen is fully equipped, and there is a beautiful Danish woodstove for use if the nights are chilly. The upstairs bath has a soaking tub with handheld shower.
Please note that after Labor Day the island is much quieter - restaurants may be closed or have more limited hours, etc.
The barn apartment has two entrances - thru the French doors that look out on the yard, or its own door in the ell.
We have mountain bikes (male and female sizes) for you to use.
Interaction with guests
We try to give our guests as much privacy as possible, but also to be available to answer questions and suggest places to hike etc.
Other things to note
We don't lock the house.
Please note that occasionally one or more of the ferry trips can be cancelled due to a medical emergency or bad weather. If you absolutely have to be off the island on a certain day, plan accordingly and give yourself extra time. Also, please review how to get on and off the island carefully - the process for doing each differs a bit and requires attention and planning!
No smoking, please.
I am a garden writer and journalist, with a degree in landscape architecture. I recently retired from my job on a local newspaper. I love gardening, sewing and designing clothing and toys, reading and travel. I volunteer at the local library for story hour and crafts, when I'm not off the island. My daughter and son-in-law, Annie and Josh, are both artists, and we bought this house and barn and share the property. My daughter and I also share catering and landscaping jobs. Because I am away a lot, they will be the hosts for visitors and they know all about the hiking and running spots on the island. We all love to cook what we grow and use as much local food as we can grow or procure. We've only been on the island for two years and love introducing others to it.
