People in Karuizawa

Karuizawa is a special place.

Do you know John Lennon visited Karuizawa many times in the 1970s and he wanted to purchase a house in Karuizawa.

In 1886 a British theologian Alexander Croft Shaw found the climate was close to his home Scotland.

He introduced Karuizawa to fellow missionaries as a getaway spot, particularly as an escape from the summer heat and humidity of cities like Tokyo. Since then, it's been a popular destination for vacations, weddings and second residences. Many artists, intellectuals, and even Royal Family members (the Emperor and Empress first met in Karuizawa) spend summers here.

We spent 4 days during the month of August at this house. This is our annual family reunion and we had a group of 11 ages from 5 -mid-70s. Host - Mr. Hirose is very organized and he reached out to us the day before checking in making sure we have all the arrival information. He met us at the house so we didn't need any special instruction to obtain the keys. His English was limited, but with the help of translation app, communication was not a problem. He was very helpful in answering all our questions and responded to text very quickly. He also helped us with taxi services, which we so appreciate as we don't speak Japanese. Overall, a very kind and gracious host. Location - The main train station near the house is Naka-Karuizawa (mid-town) about 30 min by foot, so be aware this is not where the busy downtown Karuizawa is. We arrived by Shinkansen from Tokyo and cost us $3200 by taxi to get to the house from the main karuizawa station. Very beautiful surrounding. You blend in with the nature with sight and sound. A true get-away from the city's bustling. The only problem with our visit is that we didn't have a car. This made grocery shopping difficult. We ended up dinning out of the local 7-11, which is about 15min by foot. The entrance street to the house is the same as Shiotsubo Hot Spring Hotel, so we took a picture and use it to show our taxi driver where the house is. We had one taxi driver refuse to take us due to the location/ distance from the main train station. But overall, not a big problem. About 10 min walk, there is the Hoshino Onsen resort there is free shuttles to the trian station is available. We did use it once, but during the summer month, there is often a line and it appears to be about to be every 30min. There is also a very nice Haruine shopping plaza about 10min walk - where you can find coffee shops and fun traditional goodies there. House - very roomy. We had plenty of room to stretch out for our group of 11. The kids had great time with nightly slumber party up on the loft with futons spread out. The kitchen is well-equipped, however, we didn't get to cook much. Wifi is not super high speed, but meets the needs. The house does have a wahser, but NO DRYER! I washed cloth on first day, due to the rain and high humidity, it didn't dry even after 4 days. The host did provide drying rack, but the weather condition didn't cooperate. Just be aware if you plan to do laundry here. Overall, a very nice house. Great surrounding looking out into the beautiful woods. It is not a central location compare to the downtown area, so do be mindful about your transportation needs if plan to stay at this house.

Wonderful, big house in a great location. The owner made it very easy to check in and out. It was a little hard to find and it wasn't part of the Hoshino resort and spa with access to the facilities as it seemed to suggest, but apart from that we had a great stay.
